Aplmac Posted January 7, 2009 #227 Share Posted January 7, 2009 What a beautiful shot!!!! ===> Glad you like it! I have a question.. why would they wait to take the "Pilot" off, once he got her through the channel? You are talking about auto-pilot, right? ====> Noooo. (I hope I am making some kind of sense). ===> Noooo. I am still blown away by your pictures... Can I save one to my desktop? ===> You may indeed Just to look at every day when I log on to my computer... ===> You should see mine!! Thanks Aplmac!! ===> You're very welcome. When a ship approaches our Port (almost any Port for that matter) a little Pilot boat goes out to meet it.On board the Pilot boat is a knowledgeable local guy who scrambles aboard the big ships thru a hatch close to the waterline He then makes his way up to the bridge where he advises the Master and the helmsman on matters like local winds, tides, reefs and other possible hazards as your cruise ship makes its way in while you're still snoring in Cabin 6431. When the ship docks, the local Pilot gets off via the gangway, like anyone else (after he's had his coffee and a doughnut on board, with the Captain) __________________________________________ In the evening, when the ship's about to leave Port said Pilot boards via the gangway, like anyone else makes his way up to the bridge, where together they move one of the largest moving vehicles on Earth away from the dock, sometimes spinning her around so the sharp end points forward and slowly out through the channel she goes.. taking note of the two marker buoys on either side, one painted red, the other painted green. Once the ship is out in the open water, how's the poor Pilot gonna get back? He has a wife and kids waiting on him for dinner! The Pilot boat was shadowing the cruise ship on the way out (as in my picture of The World..) and the Pilot makes his way down to Deck zero, almost, near the waterline where he gets out thru a hatch and again scrambles onto his waiting Pilot boat which takes him back to shore..and the wife and kids! __________________________ Next time you're on a cruise keep an eye out when you're up on top deck. You'll notice a small boat comes out to the ship. What's going on? The Pilot's coming and going, that's what! Most people never even clue in on all this stuff going on! :D

Has aplmac exhausted his picture supply? Never dude...I just had a busy day today - had to go fix someone's computer - another of my many "Damsels in Distress" ! :D Tomorrow is another day Pic taken at Sint Maarten, although not Carnival relevant, sorry shows Adventure of the Seas and Ocean Village Two I was on the latter

We are unable to afford the wide angle lens that ranges anywhere from $1,000 on up. It's all good!! That Sigma 10-20 lens I use on the D60 ..is more in the $500-600 range, I think... I paid GBPounds 325 for it in the UK, back in Sept. and it may be offered for a bit less as the crunch continues, so keep an eye out. Check B&H in NYC for best prices and prompt delivery. Aplmac Posted January 9, 2009 #245 Share Posted January 9, 2009 - I still have to wait until September 6th! I'll make it, but it sure is nice to see where we're going! :) I guess you got a good price on this cruise -and I say that because.. Sept. 6th. is coming right up on the statistical peak of Hurricane Season(Sept.10th.) so be aware of the possibility of port cancellations etc unless you have some control over the weather at that time of year! ____________________ I present Exhibit A - NOAA's chart displaying peak-of-season statistics for the Atlantic Hurricane season/s. where you'll notice that Sept 10th. is IT. Cigar Dude Posted January 9, 2009 #246 Share Posted January 9, 2009 Yep, I know. We always cruise that time of year. Look at the past cruises in my signature. Last year we dodged 3 hurricanes on that cruise! We should have no problem with this September! :D
Memphis_Wife Posted January 9, 2009 #247 Share Posted January 9, 2009 Ahhh Aplmac - now your just being mean ;) - I am sure that Dude will not have a hurricane! Keeping fingers crossed and daily prayers are always a good idea :p
Aplmac Posted January 9, 2009 #248 Share Posted January 9, 2009 I know I posted this one already (on page 2 of this thread) but it was kinda small. Hope you'll enjoy this significantly-bigger version of this shot overlooking Charlotte Amalie harbour, St.Thomas.. and this one taken somewhere out on the North Coast of St.Thomas overlooking a resort or something..with Tortola off in the far distance, behind that offshore island you see. and this view from the bar/shop, high up on the hill.. can't remember the name of it now..again,looking towards Tortola in the distance . Our ship tilted about 15 degrees from around noon until 7pm that night! But...we outran it, or it outran us in the opposite direction...or something! This was our cruise in Fantasy in '05! Can't remember the name of the hurricane but we almost missed it. We left port on a Sunday and it caught us by noon on Monday!
