How Good or Bad have you done in the Casino?

What's your story? What's the most you've won on your cruise and how? Or what's the most you've lost and how? I have a preference towards Blackjack but somehow always seem to put my winning back and then some. Love to hear others stories.....any tips since I have a Jan 09 booking?

Thanks

Pam

lets just say, it isn't Vegas. Of course BlackJack is exactly that so I know of some who have done well, craps are rarely played of cruise ships for some reason. as for slots, just got off the Spirit and can't believe how bad they were paying, they should be shot for keeping the machines so tight and all of us should be ashamed for continueing to feed them.

We play only BJ. Start at $10/hand & push it to $100.

Have won enough to pay for the cruise.

Have lost almost the same.

Overall, in 25 cruises, we are down a bit, but have played a LOT & enjoyed it tremendously.

Met a lot of great people as players as well as staff.

It is one of the things we look forward to on a cruise.

The best we ever did was on RCCL. I literally won a jackpot almost every night of the 12 night cruise. One of them was like $2800.00. Did very well on the Sun years ago and in the last year, three cruises, lost enough to buy a luxury car. Of those last three cruises last year, I believe we hit a total of three jackpots, two on the first cruise, one on the second cruise and none on the last one.

We were on the Spirit and my husband did terrible!! He plays black jack and usually wins a little! He says it is because of the automatic (continuous?) shuffling machine. From what I heard nobody was winning much of anything!! :(

On Spirit last week most BJ tables were continuous shuffle but that did have 2 tables with 6 or 8 deck shoes (no 1 deck/2 deck). The shoes are better since there is a break from losing your money ;) while they reshuffle. But I think the shoes were always $25 min - last night it was $50. Good news if you are at $50 the drinks seemed to be on the house.

It was pretty much Vegas rules although some casinos there have surrender (Ballys is the only one I can remember and you had to find the right table). There were some mistakes (such as not hitting soft 17) so you do have to keep your eyes open (even with the free drinks;)).

Even though I signed up with CAS I doubt I'll get anything. Table games simply do not get comp points as well as slots. At least not at Harrahs casino chain and I'm assuming CAS uses the same system. Best table comps I've had was at Hard Rock in Vegas.

I play slots, DH BJ. The most I've won was $3500.00 on the Sun. DH evens out most of the time. Worst loss was on the Jewel just this past Oct. (slots) down enough that we could of booked another cruise and stayed in another PH suite. We always get good deals from CAS. We usally budget in a couple thousand for gambling. TIPS---walk away when the cards aren't falling your way or the slots are tight. Wish I would take my own advice!:)

I never win and DH never wins, but still off to the casino we go! On our cruise last December, I never saw or heard of any big wins....but might have missed it. Did hear a fair amount of grumbling that the casino was too tight. We expect to lose, so no grumbling from us.

We received much better comps at Mirage group in Vegas than we do here at Harrah's/Bally's in Atlantic City. I played BJ for many, many hours and cashed in a lot of wood- I got 1/10th the points my slot-playing wife did for the same amount and time of play, approx. We went down last weekend just to get a Harrah's card- had a blast, but the points aren't very easy to come by on the tables. The folks at the casino said they use the same system on the ship.

So I'll have DW do the big gambling on the slots!

On the Star last year, believe it or not I won over 2 grand on the side bet on bj. When you get bj you get to spin a wheel and get from 5-100 times the side bet I also won just on the bj. My husband hit a royal flush on one of the poker machines, so we were very happy, also qualified for CAS discount this time, so I consider that winning also. Admittedly it is not AC or Vegas where if you are having nothing you can go somewhere else, but go prepared to lose and winning is a bonus.

PS Hi ROS hope all is well

Not sure I've seen or experienced this? Can someone explain? How many decks are used for this?

When I was on the Jewel last Jan the outside tables were open at $5.00 a hand on sea days....any idea if that still happens. As much as I love BJ the $10.00 and $25.00 a hand is a little pricey for me. (I just can't think of the chips as pieces of plastic without placing a value on them....I know I'll never be a big winner this way :()

The reason you do not see a lot of people playing craps is because typically cruise ships limit the amount of odds you can place on your bets to a small number (maybe 1x odds). The odds bet is the best bet in craps and what makes it statistically the game with the best odds to win in the house (if played correctly it is better the black jack. I believe only Bacarat rivals, but is completely different).

I've told this story before. So if you guys are bored - sorry.

On the first night of my cruise I was playing quarter slots, 2 or so at a time. The machine was paying well. You could risk up to 5 quarters per pull (without penalty).

Well some guy I had never met came up and asked me why I wasn't playing the max? I said it was the first night and I was going to be conservative. He said "let's play partners?" I said ok. So we upped it to the max and I continued to clean up. Next thing I know I saw him at the cage, and then he's behing me pulling on a dollar machine. I asked him about it and he said he was "re-investing" our winnings. As the night ended he handed me the bucket, it was over $350. I had started with only one roll of quarters.

From that point on I only played the dollar machines and I won every night. After the whole cruise I had a net profit of over $950 and my cruise had cost me $900. So I was very happy.

Oh, I never saw the guy again (on the 7 night cruise). Eerie!

I mainly play video poker, and am very conservative (i.e. cheap) in my wagering. But I usually make enough during the first 1-2 days to cover my gambling for the rest of the cruise. ;) (The machines seem to pay out less as the cruise progresses...so I usually break even by the end of the week.)

On our last Dawn cruise, I did the free spin and won $30 gambling credit. That was nice. :D

Wow Donna.. that is kind of eerie... You would think you would have at least seen him again in the casino. We will do that too if we do well on quarters...we will move over to dollar machines.

On our first cruise ... on the very first night ... I won $2,500 on a slot machine jackpot. The second night, won an additional $500 slot jackpot. Two nights later, won $500 playing craps. On the 5th night, won $1,500 playing a totally different slot machine.

From that point on ... encompassing 5 additional cruises ... I have not gone into ANY cruise ship casino, because there is no way on God's Green Earth that I could ever have the same stroke of luck that I did way back on our first cruise ...

On the Pearl last week, the slots seemed to get tighter as the week wore on. I hit a bunch of bonus games the first two days, and by the last, was lucky if I could pay $20 for a cherry.

Blackjack on the pool deck is fun - and they had a 1 deck game in the casino which always had a wait.

That was our experience on the Pearl in Oct as well. At least with the slots. We don't play Blackjack.

Face it, folks ... slot machines, specifically, and casinos generally, on cruise ships are black holes for our money. My experience (noted above) on the first cruise was so definately an exception to an exception to an exception to the rule, that I would be shocked to here about too many folks having consistent luck long haul come cruise time.

Here's a link to a good explanation on how continuous shufflers work:

http://casinogambling.about.com/od/blackjack/a/shuffler.htm

I won't play on a BJ table that uses a continuous shuffler, so I've been playing less and less.

You are a smart man to have stopped when you did.. LOL.. As I said, on our RCCL 12 night cruise I hit a jackpot almost every night of the cruise and my DDP at least one every other night. No where near the success since then.

I was on the star over Thanksgiving and won over $1,000. It would have been more but I did give a little back. I played blackjack both in the casino and at the pool. I also tried the 25 cent poker machines and played for a long time on $20 over an hour but did finally lose the $20.:)
