Some funny comments.:D

Comparing Somali pirates with 9/11 is apples and oranges.

9/11, insane religious terrorists, not only willing to die but wanting to die and wanting to kill as many of us in the process. They were armed with box cutters. Nasty, but not entirely lethal. Not fighting them proved to be totally lethal.

Pirates, just criminals, equipped with 'normal' criminal "intelligence." They do not want to die, they do not want to kill. They will, but that is not their mission. MONEY, is their mission. They're in it for the money. And they are armed with AK's, RPG's, and other very lethal weapons. Fighting them with scary faces carved on watermelons is probably a bad idea. Going into a machine gun battle armed with a kitchen knife does not make for a long career.

A Block 1B Phalanx Surface Mode mounted on the port & starboard Bridge wings will end the careers of pirate wanna-be's.

Now we're getting there. Time to petition Carinival to get Somalia as a port-of-call--just outside the country in International Waters. Somalia has about a 1800 mile coastline. I figure if we anchor a Carnival ship every 200 miles or so with these babies loaded aboard, we can nail a whole lot of the scum bags. Then, we'll have Royal Caribbean line up in a similar fashion, then Norweigen-- and so on-- get the picture?

I was thinking since Carnival ships' possible side entrances are pretty high off the water (not like some loaded down freighters)....it would pretty hard for anyone to get up the side of those puppies....

but then I remembered the new Dream has those "fishing balconies" on Deck 1. Guess they will need to keep that ship in safer waters.

Missed profit-center for Carnival?

I'd stand in line all day with a fist full of $20's for a turn at that.:cool::D

With the # of active duty & veterans onboard, that "repel boarders" enhancement would pay for itself in 6 weeks.

lol!

Imagine their faces everytime someone yelled "PULL":D

Pump the exhaust air from the casino in their direction. There is so much smoke that short term it will repell them like mace and long term, they will die from cancer!

Ahh, good plan, good plan!! But we will need a plan B too.:D

How about this for plan B: Molotov cocktails created from all of the empty beer bottles up on Lido deck. Get some of the biggest throwing arms of the ship and bomb those rinky-dink pirate vessels with a REAL Bud Light!! :D

A: I can't believe some of you are suggesting using alcohol for ammo. Let's keep that back for the good guys, eh? ;)

B. OMG the mass market cruise lines working together for the good of humanity???? (or, to maintain profitability;)) what has the world come to???

C. Personally I think the large guns are the answer :)

On the serious side "...Get our men and women "in uniform" to devise a plan and overtake the bad guys..." might work, but then again it might not. Many of the folks in the military are not "combat" types, they are clerks, mechanics, etc etc etc. They usually only touch a personal weapon once a year, if that, and they have zero training/experience in making battle plans, or in implementing them. They might cause more trouble than they fix. I am not trying to belittle our military folks, I love them. But facts are facts...

OK, they are not all Special Operations Squads, SEALS, Special Forces, Marine Recons and Air Commandos. Would you rather have CD's, PVP's and TA's??

None of the above! But I would pay dearly to see some of the Carnival dancers firing away at those pirates with their bikinis on from the Sun Deck!!! :D

It's like living in the twilight zone. I turn on the news, and almost daily I see a story about some pirates (especially off the coast on Somalia) attacking and seizing some large vessel.

Remember we travel on some very large bodies of water and help is not always just around the corner.

How should (or would) you handle such an attack if it happened on your cruise  (Remember 9-11) ?

How can (or should) Carnival and the cruise industry ATTACK BACK??

Most of the attacks I have read about have been on ships with a small crew. The large cruise ships with a crew that may be in excess of 1,000 is not such an attractive target. Then add in 2 to 3,000 passengers and it becomes even more difficult.

If something did happen though I would do whatever it took to keep my family safe!

Just organize a "Pirate Hunter" charter cruise for my redneck brethren, advertise there is no limit, no license required, bring you own rifle and ammo, and mention that pirates taste like chicken.

Alternatively, a few Predator RPVs with Hellfire missles loitering overhead should prove pretty effective. A relatively small ship could probably be retrofitted to make an effective dedicated RPV "aircraft carrier" to patrol the area with Predator class RPV's modified for naval operations. It would take coordination with shipping and cruise companies as well as other navies in the area but would probably be pretty cost effective considering the vast areas to be covered and the limited resources available.

1. Ship needs to be able to outrun any potential threat

2. Ship needs to be in full working order all the time

3. Ship requires some kind of sensor fit that can detect the pirates small vessels at enough of a range that they can take evasive manouvres

Most cruise lines would have these capabilities I would hope.

4. GPMG's and .50 cal HMG's mounted on the deck you get the tenders from aswell as some kind of night vision or other equipment to allow the crew to aim them at night or in inclement weather.

5. Crew trained to use the above.

That should convince any would be pirate to leave well enough alone.

These even I (the not so military) could shoot. Let me at em. Can we put a thousand rounds or so on our Sail & Sign cards? Bring on the Pirates of the Caribbean!! :D

3000 rounds per minute! Firing one of those I could blow a pirate row boat out of the water in, Oh, I dunno, about half an hour or so.
