devRDH Posted November 12, 2004 #1 Share Posted November 12, 2004 My Dad will have to take IV meds through a line in his arm for the entire time we are on the cruise. The Medicare says he needs an RN or MD to oversee it. Has anyone out there had this before. What is the protocol? We will carry a prescription and all meds and a letter from the doctor. RCCL said there is a nurse 24/7 onboard. Wiull they help us. They say yes. Any experience? devRDH@aol.com Thanks , Melanie
kitty9 Posted November 12, 2004 #2 Share Posted November 12, 2004 All cruise ships now carry at least one physician and one or two nurses, so getting medical help won't be a problem. But, the charges to do this for your dad will add up very quickly. I hope you purchased medical insurance with a pre-existing waiver clause for your cruise. With this, the charges for the medical center visits will be covered. Most US medical insurances won't cover cruises, and medicare/medicaid won't pay a dime for any procedures outside of the US. Most cruise lines charge at least $30 or more for just walking into the medical center for a consultation.
