Coco421 Posted January 4, 2009 #1 Share Posted January 4, 2009 Besides whale watching in Juneau what would you say were some things not to be missed? Our kids will be 13 & 10 and parents are coming too.
Assateague Island Princes Posted January 4, 2009 #2 Share Posted January 4, 2009 First time in Juneau, we waited to see what the weather was like, then took the tram to the top of Mt. Roberts - nice gift shop, restaurant, etc. (with their resident eagle - Spirit, I think was his name), then hiked for about 3 hours, all the way to the top! Excellent trails and the views up there are magnificent! Got a little nervous though seeing the signs along the way warning of "brown bear habitat". Didn't see any though and breathed a sigh of relief once we went back down the tram. Then we just walked around the town, and went back to an almost empty ship. Spent several hours in the hot tub on the top deck - nothing finer than the stunning scenery with eagles soaring over head while sitting in a bubbling warm hot tub! This last time we went whale watching with Harv and Marv's (HIGHLY recommend them! best excursion we did on both our AK cruises!) then H&M dropped us off at Mendenhall Glacier, where we hiked for a bit til they picked us up about an hour later. Really nice to see a glacier up close and personal. Didn't go into the visitor center, but I understand it is really informative. There were rangers all over the place showing big hunks of glacial ice, talking to people, etc. We were a bit early (first week of June) to see any bears, but I understand that they are there quite a bit during the salmon run. Budget Queen Posted January 5, 2009 #3 Share Posted January 5, 2009 Take a look at a shore excursion list. These offer easy detailed information on what is available in each city. Few tours aren't "worthwhile". The "not to be missed" list will take you 10 trips. :) Narrow down your interests.
MercedMike Posted January 5, 2009 #4 Share Posted January 5, 2009 Besides whale watching in Juneau what would you say were some things not to be missed? Our kids will be 13 & 10 and parents are coming too. There are sooooo many excursions in Alaska, both ships excursions, independent operators, and also do it yourself. You have to decide what is right for you and your family. At http://www.bully4.us/cruising.html you can check out reviews and pictures of several trips to Alaska which include many excursions of each type. Maybe it will give you some ideas. Have a GREAT cruise!
