sjbaker12 Posted November 13, 2004 #1 Share Posted November 13, 2004 Will be going on the Grand Princess-Western Caribbean Dec 2005 and I'm seeking your advise as to the best side to be on. We are booked in a BA Caribe cabin on the port side. I have lots of time to change sides. Any suggestions? Thanks!
sue d. miller Posted November 13, 2004 #2 Share Posted November 13, 2004 I don't think there is a best side!! I get the same cabin, and I am on the port side. Views are beautiful, no matter which side you see!!! :)
KurtMo Posted November 13, 2004 #3 Share Posted November 13, 2004 Is one side of the ship designated as non-smoking and the other smoking? My wife hates the smoke and I'd hate to have the balcony next door creating a cloud if I could avoid it! Thanks, Kurt
C 2 C Posted November 14, 2004 #4 Share Posted November 14, 2004 Did the Island Princess to the canal last year.. Port side was in the sun every morning. W/O overhang breakfast got very hot... Would suggest starboard.
sue d. miller Posted November 14, 2004 #5 Share Posted November 14, 2004 There is no designated side for smoking on Princess!! Sorry!!!
westwind6371 Posted November 14, 2004 #6 Share Posted November 14, 2004 Hi Sue; Last year on the Sun, and on other Princess ships I have been on, one side of the ship was designated non-smoking, however that did not apply to state rooms, only to outside decks. Sorry I can't remember if it was port or starboard. Fair winds Dave
mii Posted November 14, 2004 #7 Share Posted November 14, 2004 Designated non-smoking is on the starboard side on the outside decks. Smoking is allowed on the port side on the open decks. This does not apply to the staterooms. Marilyn
KAJOKG Posted November 14, 2004 #8 Share Posted November 14, 2004 We have been on both Port and Starboard on our cruises. Much depends on which pier the ship is assigned to enter and dock. It really doesn't matter....both sides have positives. There is NO designated smoking with regard to Port or Starboard, however, there are outside tables with No Smoking signs on them. On our cruise last week, we had chain smokers in the cabin just below us and they smoked on their balcony. It was just AWFUL!!! Their smoke even came into our cabin. I have asthma and I generally try to avoid smoking areas but this could not be avoided. Thank goodness they were not always on their balcony. sjbaker12 Posted November 14, 2004 Author #9 Share Posted November 14, 2004 Thanks all for the quick response. I have lots of time to ponder this decision. It sounds like I can't go wrong on either side.
sailorgirl Posted November 17, 2004 #10 Share Posted November 17, 2004 We have sailed both portside and starboard. You never know which side might get the better view in port. But I always figure out which side is most likely to get the sun - either morning or afternoon - depending on the ship's direction. On a transatlantic crossing from Europe to the U.S., for example, I like portside because it gets more sun due to the southerly exposure. If you're sailing the Caribbean, you're likely to be rotated around and get everything one time or another.
joanne1 Posted November 17, 2004 #11 Share Posted November 17, 2004 Please refresh my memory - I can never keep it straight. If I am standing at the back of the ship (whatever it is called :D ) looking forward which side is which?!?!
Druke I Posted November 17, 2004 #12 Share Posted November 17, 2004 Joann From the back (stern), looking forward: Left is Port, Right is Starboard. Some people remember as both left and port have four letters, while right and starboard don't.

Rare Paula_MacFan Posted November 17, 2004 #14 Share Posted November 17, 2004 I just got off the Grand last week, so I can tell you that in PUBLIC AREAS, like the pools, PORT IS SMOKING and STARBOARD IS NONSMOKING. We had a BB Caribe balcony on the port side, and loved it. We had great views sailing into and out of both Cozumel and Costa Maya, and hosted 'sail away' parties on our balcony. Cozumel was especially nice, as the sun was setting and the lights of the island and other cruise ships were just coming on...a nice view as we sailed off. MaryPoppinz Posted November 18, 2004 #15 Share Posted November 18, 2004 But I always figure out which side is most likely to get the sun - either morning or afternoon - depending on the ship's direction. That's how we decide. But on a roundtrip from Galveston, you'd get both. So I would figure out how to get the most of the sun position that I like. :)
