What else can we do besides Rome in Civitavecchia

Recommended Posts

Although Rome is fabulous, we have been twice and so would like to miss it this time, but would like to do something on that day.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Ellen

Check into Ostia Antica. I have heard it is a great place to see. And closer than Rome. We are going to do that the day we return to port instead of going into the city.

Good luck!:)

The most important sight close by would be Tarquinia which offers important Etruscan excavations and a museum with many artefacts.

In the hills around Rome several small town are lovely to visit by car.

Much less important but good for a leisurely day if you do not want to travel, is Civitavecchia itself. There a number of interesting sights close the port. Right at the port entrance there is the Fort Michelangelo. Just across the street the historic city centre starts. The cathedrale and several other church are worth a visit as are the Roman ruins, the remains of the walls, the fountains, historic buildings and more.

Even just watching the "normal" Italian life is a pleasure.

See http://www.civitavecchia.it/a-spasso/monumenti.asp for a first overview.

Ostia Antica is really interesting. Yet, using public transportation you need to go via Rome. Thus the travel time is longer.

we went to Ostio, yes we had to go in to Rome but we had enough time to spend a full morning, have lunch, then go in to Rome to see stuff we hadn't before the few days before, then get the train back to the port

was a fantastic day

photos and details of the day are in our travelpod log, link below

I have to agree totally with this post. Tarquinia is a beautiful little walled town. Very easy to get to by bus from Civitavecchia. Excavations are outside the town but there is a bus from the 'main square' area in Tarquinia. The Palazzo Vitelleschi e Museo Strusco across from Piazza Cavour (main square) is a must see. Nominal fee.

We wandered for a couple hours up and down the hills within the town along the very narrow streets. The on again/off again rain that day did dampen our spirit of adventure a bit. We will definitely go back again the next trip and make it a longer adventure.
