bzy1 Posted January 23, 2009 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2009 I am curious to know, since I have not been on a cruise since pre 9/11, how the ships handle passports. It used to be they would take your passport and hold it until the end of the cruise and you did not need to carry your passport with you when you disembarked at the ports of call in Mexico. Is this still the same?
startraveler Posted January 23, 2009 #2 Share Posted January 23, 2009 Which cruise line, and more importantly, what country is your passport?

pvfunlover Posted January 23, 2009 #6 Share Posted January 23, 2009 Hi Brenda. Funny seeing you on this board. :) The cruise lines don't keep your passport for the Mexico destinations. I'm not sure about other places though.
Rare mduffy1834 Posted January 23, 2009 #7 Share Posted January 23, 2009 Your passport is not taken and kept by the cruise line. After checking in, where you are required to show it, it is given back to you. Your sea pass allows you to get on and off the boat, without needing the passport (although you may need to show a picture ID upon re-entry). I usually carry a copy of my passport with me, just in case.
bzy1 Posted January 24, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted January 24, 2009 Thanks for the replies! The question was for someone else so I said I would ask. My cruise experiences were in the Caribbean and from Puerto Rico or Miami but in the 90's. Two of the ships kept our passports when we checked in, so I was not sure if they still did or not or if depended on the ship/destination. Thanks again! :)
