Is it still better to deal in US $ than pesos? And will local downtown grocery and liquor stores all take credit cards? Thanks for all the assistance!

Since you will only be in town for a day, it isn't convenient to change dollars to pesos and then change the remains at the end of the day back to dollars. Supermarkets and liquor stores will take your credit cards. The other purchases you make might be a better deal in pesos, but not by much. It really isn't worth it.
