I am posting this as an official review now, but just in case anyone from the boards is interested....

My review of Liberty of the Seas… January 31-February 7, 2009 Eastern Caribbean

Overall – GREAT experience, BEAUTIFUL ship, not so great weather (would not book this time of year again. 1 great day, 2 okay days, the rest not so great days if you are expecting a “Caribbean-tropical-beach experience”), great people, pretty good food and entertainment, etc. Details below…

I bought this as a Christmas present for my boyfriend (I am 27 yrs old, he is 29 yrs old), so kept it a secret from him for 6 months (nearly impossible!!). This was his first cruise and my 5th – my 4th with Royal Caribbean. The day seemed to come so slowly, but then it ended up getting here fast the last 2 weeks before we left. Here’s my opinion of everything….

We live in Jacksonville, FL (6 hrs drive to Miami), so went down Friday afternoon and stayed with a friend who was kind enough to bring us to the port so we did not have to leave our car there. We arrived at the port at about 10:45am (I actually wanted to get there a little earlier than that, just to be sure we got on first and didn’t have to wait in a long line!!), and were on the boat in no longer than 30 minutes. It was incredibly smooth and very impressive. Did not wait in lines at all. Got our seapass, and were on the ship very quickly. Of course our rooms weren’t ready until 1pm which was fine, we had lots of exploring to do! Oh- A tip I read from these boards which was nice was to take the stairs all the time… I think out of 7 nights we only used the elevators 3 times total. They were pretty busy, but we really just didn’t want to bother… and wanted to try not to gain THAT much weight since we did plan on enjoying our eating and drinking!

So first impression of the ship– WOW! This ship is impressive. I have been on a lot of the other RCCL classes (most recently Mariner), and WOW, this thing is massive! It was so clean and just so beautiful. I was very impressed.

My 2nd overall impression looking back on things… there is SO much to do that we did not nearly do everything we should have or could have. BUT it was vacation… we were impulsive, did what we wanted when we wanted, relaxed, etc. and will just have to complete everything else on a later vacation!

Started at the top and worked our way down. We were able to get some great pictures before a lot of people boarded. And I think it was just noon when we were getting our first beverage – the drink of the day! J A tip I read on here that was very helpful was to get the drink of the day as a cheap means of buying a drink ($5.95 plus you can keep the glass), BUT to ask for it without the souvenir glass (I mean really, who will really keep reusing the RCCL plastic pool glasses). This made the price be $4.75 per drink. Very good price.

After we toured the entire ship, it was about 1pm so we made our way to our room, where we met our cabin steward Dunbar. Dunbar was a very good room steward. I wouldn’t say he was the best I’ve had, but far from the worst. He did his thing, always left the cute towel animals and fresh ice, removed the drinks from the fridge per our request, and was friendly when we saw him. Good experience there. Our room was a promenade view (6281) which was a new category for me, but it was great. Of course we weren’t in the room all that much. We looked down onto the pub and the stairs that led down to the casino. I commented that I never heard anything at all when trying to sleep, which was nice. The room was just fine size-wise for the two of us.

Let’s see…. Activities….Rock wall – loved it, used it several times, always trying a more challenging wall, great view from the top. FlowRider – actually did not try it. I was too nervous that I was going to get hurt. Watched it a few times, but with the weather being so crappy (very windy and chilly), it was not the most appealing to me. Will try this next time. Bingo – played 3 times, and actually won once! However, I had to share my prize with someone else so I only walked out with $56, far less than I payed in total for the 3 games! Oh well, had fun! Casino – loved it and although it was smoky, I never really felt “overwhelmed” by the smoke on the ship. Of course I lost a lot of $$ in the casino though. Should have learned my lesson that the slots don’t pay out on ships. My boyfriend did pretty well at the tables though and it pretty much covered his $400 seapass bill. Love & Marriage – hilarious. I thought it was the funniest one I had ever seen. The parades in the promenade were great. Ice skating – again, did not do that. It seemed the times it was open never worked out with us. We played trivia a lot – 4 or 5 times I think. Always came close but never won. Karaoke – watched a few times and had many laughs, but no thanks didn’t participate! The gym – awesome. Great equipment – used the gym 4 times, twice it was very packed, couldn’t even get a cardio machine and I would honestly guess that there was close to 50 cardio machines in total (just a guess). Did not participate in the classes at all, though I wanted to try. Most were between $12-$15 / class. Spa – got a “special” on the day in Labadee at 5pm, so had a mini massage, facial etc. It was good, not great, not bad, but like most people said, they do try to upsell you the products. I simply said no thanks and it was okay. But the actually service was alright. The Quest – funny as always.

FOOD….We did My Time Dining at the last minute. We were scheduled for the late dinner seating (8:30pm), and were put on the top dining room floor at a table for 6. Only 4 people (including us) actually were assigned to our table. The other two included a girl who turned out to be one of the ice skaters on the ship whose mother was on the cruise that week. So they said they probably wouldn’t be at the table most nights due to her schedule with work that week. So…rather than sit at a 6 top with just my boyfriend and I, we signed up for My Time Dining and did love it. It was so convenient going when you wanted and we got to meet new people every night. Some of the nights, per our request, we were placed a table for 2 with just us. All of the servers were awesome. Windjammer – just as good as the Windjammer usually is. Was never terribly impressed but it isn’t bad either. Only had a problem finding a seat once and I was actually alone that day, so I sat with another couple who ended up being the couple we spent time with most on the ship. Ate breakfast in the dining room twice and had room service twice. .Both very nice. Ate at Chops on Thursday night which was a first for me and we really enjoyed it. Thought it was well worth the money. Great ambience, great food. Of course we ate a lot and overall were very impressed.

Going back to the drinks a little bit… I will say that we do enjoy our beverages and did drink quite a bit… J We did bring the rum runner flasks (again, learned about them from this site), but I honestly didn’t feel too terrible about bringing them onboard b/c we hardly used them (drank about 1/3 of what we brought), because drinking in the room just wasn’t so convenient for us, unless we were getting ready for the evening. We enjoyed wine in Vintages a few times, several drinks by the pool of course, some beers in the pub, champagne in the Champagne Bar, loved Olive or Twist, etc. I really thought the prices were reasonable. Especially compared to several places on land. Wine started at around $5.50 on up. Gin / tonics and other mixed drinks were no more than $6. My boyfriend loves scotch, and though he did not order this, he saw that the Johnny Walker Blue was $21.75 / glass (which he has gotten for an insane $50 / glass in Jacksonville, FL). The only prices that were not good as far as the drinks go were the beer prices. We didn’t actually buy a bucket of beer at the pool (kept to mixed drinks usually there), but the beer was between $4-$6 usually, which was usually for Michelob Ultra, Bud Light, nothing too fancy. So that was a little interesting. We did get the soda package which I probably wouldn’t do again. For some reason I thought the diet coke tasted funny the whole time, generic or something. For those of you who are diet coke-aholics like myself, you know when you are drinking coke, or diet pepsi or anything else of the matter and you can tell when you are not drinking actual “diet coke”. It was ok, but you really have to drink it a lot to make it worth it.

Shows – We did not see all of them. Saw the opening juggler and comedian, the closing juggler and comedian, late night comedy, and then Somewhere in Time (I think that was the name. Don’t have the compass in front of me). They were fine. The production show was a little strange. Great set, great costumes, great singing, but strange story line in my opinion. No tickets needed for the ice shows anymore – there were 4 offered throughout the cruise.

Staff – everyone was fantastic. James Andrews was our cruise director and I thought he was great. Though one time I caught him walking around the gym (when there weren’t many people in there at all because we were in a port), and he may have been in a hurry or something, but I tried striking up a conversation with him and he was very short and not very chatty or how he is when he is in the public eye. I wasn’t sure why, but either way wasn’t too concerned. I figured it has to be tough to be “on” all the time, and I may have caught him at a bad time. The cruise directors staff was great. We had Phil on the Mariner a few years ago and I was glad to see him on Liberty and I guess he got a promotion b/c he was the manager of the rest of the staff. And he was hilarious. Everyone we came across said hello and always had a smile and were answering questions. Very great staff. And everyone was always cleaning!

Like I said before, the ship is awesome. One of my favorite places was the helicopter pad deck. It was tough to find, deck 4 all the way forward, climb some stairs, and some more stairs, and there it is. It is the most forward part of the ship that the public can get to, but is not very well known. It was an amazing view being out there in the pitch black staring up at the stars. Though it was closed quite a few times due to the wind.

So this brings me to the weather. The day before we left (Friday) the weather took a turn for the cold in Florida, and we left on a cold, windy day. The first day / night was the roughest I have ever experienced on a ship. I had the worst headache and literally was up from 4-8am having a hard time falling asleep b /c of the waves and current. The wind was incredible the entire time. It was usually between 25-45 mph. Crazy. We had one very lovely weather day when we were at sea – sunny, no clouds in the sky, no wind, and about 80-85. Two of the days (San Juan, St. Martin) weren’t bad either, but the rest was just chilly, very windy, we spent it bundled in the towels instead of soaking in the sun. But alas, you never know what the weather will bring!

Islands….

San Juan – arrived first stop. We had read a lot about this place, and decided to do the Bacardi distillery on our own (not with the ship). So we planned on walking over to the ferry dock, taking the Catana ferry, and then a taxi to the distillery. We docked at 3pm, were off around 3:30pm, and it closed at 4:30pm. Well…as we were waiting, I glanced at another woman’s watch and was staring for awhile before I realized her watch said nearly 5pm, not 4pm. I had no idea that Puerto Rico was an hour ahead, so we missed the tour. I don’t know if I just missed the announcement somehow, or it wasn’t really told (all that saw was to just make sure to stay on ship’s time). So that was a bummer but we got a good laugh about our mistake. So then we walked up to the fort, walked around there quite a bit, then finished walking the old city. Stopped for some tapas at a place that was recommended on the boards - El Picoteo in El Convento. I thought it was pretty good. We had some mojitos here and they weren’t my favorite actually. But the food was great. Did lots of window shopping, but did not buy anything. They day here was pretty nice, but it was a shame that we did not dock until 3pm. We got back on the ship about 9:00pm.

Next stop – St. Martin. After a lot of reading and researching on the boards, we decided NOT to scuba dive there. I had read some not so great things about the diving there and being as we are newcomers, we didn’t want to be stressed. Plus we do live in Florida so can get to great diving places easier. So we booked a recommended tour with Bernard’s Tours. That was fantastic. It was a great way to spend the day, especially being that it was our first visit to the island. It was $35+tip which was very reasonable. Went to Orient Beach (interesting), Maho Beach where we saw the planes land which was fun, and just enjoyed the scenery. Beautiful island.

Last stop was Labadee. I had been there before and I didn’t really realize how much that place is dependent on the weather. It was rainy and overcast the entire day. And cool. We took a tender over at about 10am, walked around the entire island, through the markets, then when lunch was served we waited for at least 30 minutes (and we were one of the first people there). It seemed that since no one was laying on the beach (oh, and I heard that all of the beach excursions were cancelled due to weather, but not the zipline), EVERYONE wanted to eat when it opened. The “bungalow” buffet we chose was fine. I was also disappointed to see that they only set it up in half of the bungalow. The rest had empty buffet tables, while people were waiting in the rain. Not cool. I had a hot dog but the buns were crunchy-stale. Basically we just wanted to get back on the ship as quickly as possible.

Packing – packed too much of course but should have brought any extra pair of pants and sweatshirt due to the weather, oh and a windbreaker. Some things that did come in handy – a highlighter, bottles of water, travel clock etc.

Photos – we ended up buying four 8x10 photos in total. But what we did, which I also read on the boards here, was to take a lot of pics throughout the week – different locations, backgrounds, poses, dresses etc, then gather them all together so on the last night, you can go through all 20-30 pictures and pick out your favorites. Rather than liking one on day 2, only to find you like day 5 ones better and buying both. That was a good tip for us.

Went to the Meet & Mingle which was fun. Lots of people there. Went to the Crown & Anchor welcome back which was nice, enjoyed the captain’s cocktail hour, etc. Really met a lot of great people onboard. Never had a problem with any children running around, teenagers acting “crazy” or anything like that. Great people.

Getting off the ship – for me, this was the worst experience of the cruise, though it wasn’t because it was a terribly long process, but rather an incident that happened to me. (Keep in mind, this just happened yesterday, so fresh in my mind and it still irritates me). We were not in a hurry to get off of the ship, so were Purple 2 tags (9-9:30am departure). At about 8:30am after a lovely departure breakfast in the dining room, they had already called all the colors, so we started leaving. It took about 20 minutes to get to the exit of the ship where we scanned our seapasses for the last time. Let me back track a second…. The day before (Friday), my boyfriend surprised me with a beautiful bouquet of flowers – all kinds – from the ship. It was delivered to our room Friday night as a “thank you” for the best Christmas present he has ever received. After that, we had checked with numerous RCCL staff if we could take the flowers off of the ship, since they weren’t even fully bloomed yet, and since they were made on the ship, not on an island. We were ensured that yes, we could take them off of the ship, but that I would have to claim them (no problem), and immigration would have to inspect the flowers to be sure they did not have any foreign bugs (again, not a problem, though since we were at sea on Friday there would have been no way the flowers left the ship ever). After trekking the vase of flowers around Saturday morning at breakfast, the RCCL staff told me I could not take them off the ship. After telling him several times that we were told we COULD take them, and discuss it with customs, he took them from me and placed them to the side. I was pretty upset but didn’t want to let it ruin my day. However, while waiting for our luggage on the carousal, at least 5 or 6 separate women walked by with their vases of flowers! So then I became really upset. After we got our luggage (took about 20 minutes for all pieces to come out), got a porter, went through customs lines (again, took at least 20-25 minutes for this portion), the immigration officer told me that yes, I could have brought them, he just had to physically look at them and inspect them. However, he told me I couldn’t go back. Of course. When we got outside, I went back into the RCCL office where we boarded the ship originally, had the run-around trying to get in contact with the correct person, finally was escorted to a manager outside, who told me that he could absolutely get the flowers back and would walk up there himself to do it. As he radio-ed to the staff on the walkway, he was told that they “just threw them away 2 minutes before”. Nice. So, he told me that we can call Customer Service on Monday and should be able to get our money back for them. I doubt we will ever see the money again, but we will call, because it was not fair how they handled this, in my opinion. I do not think it was right that the RCCL staff took them from me, when if they were taken at all, they should have been taken by US Immigrations / customs. But oh well.

All in all, would definitely do this ship again. You really don’t realize how big it is, or how many people are onboard, until everyone tries to get off at the ports – then you wait in line for a bit. But it was beautiful, fun activities, would try a different itinerary and at a different time of year. Again there was always SO much to do, that no one would ever get bored.

Please feel free to ask any specific questions!

Hi Kristen,

Thank you for the review. I am considering booking this ship for a vacation for myself, DH and our two teen daughters. They have never cruised before. They are rock climbers and I know they would enjoy the "wall" etc.... and love the entire ship experience.

Years ago, our first cruise we sailed Royal. It was an older ship. LOTS of extremely drunk people from early a.m.on. People were diving over other people into the pool. Never could get close to a hot tub. It took many years before we cruised again and have loved it since. Realizing we just had bad luck. Sort of like you with the weather.

I was asked to join some friends ( that we met on a cruise) They are sailing on the Celebrity, Constellation, aft cabin ( VERY nice, the balcony is 18 feet deep ) to the Baltics for 2 weeks in June. The cost for me to go with them would be approx $4,000, plus extras. I am soooo tempted. But I can take all 4 of us for a week for about $2,000 more. I would love to take this very luxurious Baltic cruise but I feel very selfish. Reading about your experience on the Liberty is helping me make the decision.

Thank you for taking the time to write a great review.

I was also on this sailing and will be posting a review shortly :) I just had to say, we were at Labadee for the first time, and despite the weather, I was not impressed. It was DIRTY. There was garbage all over Dragons Breath Beach are...there were beer bottles at the bottoms of bushes etc. It just wasnt what I pictured. (and I may be cranky because my excursion was cancelled :o) We didn't bother to wait for lunch...we just went back to the ship.

I enjoyed your review very much and I am anxiously awaiting Shannon12's also. When I read the title for your posting my first reaction was that no review can be too long, there is no need to apologize. I think we're all here to read as much as we can, and I know that I am more likely to think a review is too short, not too long. I'm sorry to hear about the mixup with the flowers and I think you have every right to be upset. Glad that the rest of the trip went great though, especially the tour with Bernard, since we will be doing the same thing five weeks from now.

Glad you are all enjoying the review. It was fun to write, and I keep thinking of more things to say...ha. We ate in Johnny Rockets which was always fun, enjoyed the air hockey, played some games in the game room quite a bit (with a great view), played in a volleyball game, mini golf, etc.

I am also awaiting Shannon's review. I didn't notice any of the dirtiness on Labadee, other than the lack of people in the public areas b/c of the weather, which may have made the "trash" more obvious. Didn't notice myself though. I really was anxious to get back on the ship. The only reason we even stayed for a little (I think it was about 2 hours total) was because my boyfriend hadn't been so we explored the entire island. But yes, the island is obviously under construction to expand, but I knew that going in, so didn't let that affect us. We enjoyed watching the zip liners, especially the one who got stuck at the end and they had to throw him a rope. Ha.

Also, motherchic, it really appeared that there were a ton of "teenager" activities. Every time I walked past the teen club area, there were a lot of people in there. I know it would be a tough decision to make, so if you have any specific questions, let me know. Your girls should have a great time though.

sorry about the flowers. but on another note. when you left the ship did you take a taxi or did your friends pick you up? just wondering if we will have a hard time or long wait for a taxi? Really glad you liked the ship though, it will be our first time on her.

Thanks for a great review.

I'm also glad you stated that Jacksonville to Miami is 6 hours. We will be renting a car and visiting my sister in Jacksonville after our cruise and she keeps telling me it will be closer to 8 hours. I thought it was about 6 so I'm happy to see that I am right!:p

Yes, as Shannon mentioned, PLENTY of taxis... we did have our friend pick us up, so waited at the port until about 10:30 when she arrived and there were taxis there the entire time, driving around with their trunks open, wanting your business!

I have to agree about Labadee, we were also on this sailing and have been to labadee several times and it had been one of our favorite ports, however with the construction going on due to them building a new pier for the Oasis it seemed dirty and not very pretty, I think RCCL should probably use their other private island until Labadee's new improvements are completed..it was disappointing..

Great review! We did the Liberty Eastern itinerary two weeks ago. Did Phil do the "booty" dance for you at Bingo? That was so funny!! We also had bad weather and a rainy Labadee day. We never got off the ship that day. We come from Chicago, so it was quite disappointing to not get our tropical sun, but at least it wasn't -20 degrees! We had horribly rude people (a lot of them) on our cruise. Did you run into that at all?

Welcome Home! I hope you get your flower money back!

Phil's "Booty Dance" was so funny!! I'm wearing my bingo shirt right now lol.

As for the rudeness of passengers, it was just the typical stuff. People are in their own worlds and dont really show a care for anyone else.

I agree... it was just the typical rudeness, nothing out of the ordinary. You are always going to run into people cutting you off, being loud and obnoxious etc. but nothing bothered me at all on the cruise.

The Booty Dance was great, yes. What was great was that when I mentioned to Phil how my niece and I loved him (and the booty dance) on Mariner 2 1/2 yrs ago, he burned the booty song on a CD for me to give to her. I gave it to her yesterday and she loved it. Very sweet.

On another note, Shannon (or anyone), do you know if we can order the Cruise in Review DVD after the fact? I wonder if they save them and you can place a phone order? My boyfriend and I are in it quite a bit and he regretted not buying it. Anyone know? I will ask them tomorrow when I call regarding my flowers, but wasn't sure if anyone knew.

You were lucky on the rudeness factor. It was unbelievable on our sailing! People knocking into me and my children constantly. Trips down the hallway were games of "chicken". Other people on my sailing noticed the same things. It was unlike any other cruise we have been on!!!

As for the booty song, do you know the name and/or artist? I think it is called Bootyland. I wish I had thought to ask Phil about it. He is just about the cutest thing!!

We get our turn in a little over 4 months! Doing the Western route.

Q's.

Did you get a return passenger booklet and gift? What were they?

How much was the bingo? the paper cards, not the electronic!

What days/times did they have the trivia/games? (I LOVE these too! :o)

At what time did you end up dining with MTD? Were you required to pre-pay the grats?

Any other tid-bits you remember are appreciated for those that cruise after you!

Thank You for the great review of the LOS. We are so looking forward to our cruise on this big ship. And also, thanks for the tip on the Drink of the Day. That really helps on saving some $$$. I didn't know that..learn something new everyday when I read these boards. It is such a big help.

Glad you enjoyed your cruise, which I can't imagine anyone not enjoying a cruise.

OK let's see. Yes, I got the gold member coupon book. It had the typical stuff (you can do a search on the boards and see) - Buy 1, Get 1 Cocktail, Free Johnny Rockets, Free Wine Tasting, 1 Free Bingo card when a packet is purchased, etc. I cannot remember exactly but know you can find it on the boards. In the room also when we got there was our Meet & Mingle invite. At some point throughout the cruise I received a hat in the room (I think this was for being a gold member). At the M&M, they had little lanyard/book things that you can wear around your neck w/ a seapass and notebook thing. And a magnet of the ship.

Trivia was every day I think. I think there were 2 sessions every day... General trivia, movie/theater trivia, scene-it movie trivia, Friends TV show trivia, Cartoon trivia, etc. I have the compasses at home so can check more specifically later today.

Bingo... The first one I did was Win a Cruise bingo so it was more expensivce. I think the regular cards were around $47 but for this one I did the electronic version which was around $65. The next two times I did paper cards only (and won using a paper card), and paid $35 / game which included 4 different games, 6 cards for each.

Yes for MTD you had to prepay your gratutiies, but since this was a gift for my boyfriend for Christmas, I actually already had pre-paid them so it was no big deal for me. We went at different times every night. The earliest was around 7pm and the latest around 8:45. I found that the 7pm time we went was the busiest, as the first seating is just getting under way (I guess). You could make reservations the night before, or the day of, which we did a few times, but not always. it was hard knowing what would be on the next day's agenda at that point. Sometimes we walked up and had to wait in the same line if you had reservations, then got seated immediately. So it didn't matter if reservations were made in my opinion.

Was luggage Valet avail and if so do you know if it was avail for international guests? Many Thanks

I'm not entirely sure what you are referring to... When you arrive at the port and getting a porter to take the luggage? Or on the return end? Or at some other point? Can you clarify a little more please?
