Which Beach / Hotel Area Should We Book?

We are flying into Tampa and we are being picked up at the airport by snowbirds living in Florida. We want to go stay a night at a motel/hotel/resort on a really nice beach with affordable accomodations (around $100 for the night). There are 3 adults and a 5 year child.

 

We wanted easy access to highway 60 from the airport and then back to central Florida - so Clearwater Beach looked easy to get to.

 

Is Clearwater Beach a nice beach and are there any affordable accomodation in the area anyone could recommend? Is St. Pete's beach nicer? Which beach would be better for a child re: fun activities/venues?
