Worthwhile to lug along a TRIPOD?

My thoughts:

We just returned from a two week cruise through the Panama Canal on the oosterdam. I lugged my monopod on the airplane, no problem, though it looks like a club. Then it sat on the desk in our cabin for the whole trip. There was plenty of light for hand held pictures inside the ship, and plenty of railings for support for sunrise, sunset and night low light photos. I won't bother carrying it on a similar cruise in the future. Now, a cruise to Alaska will be a different story.

Thanks for the feedback on taking a tripod on a plane. We have a relatively large one (27") with a built in monopod and a smaller one. I think we'd just pack the larger one in our luggage if we decided to take it. The smaller one we could definitely carry on though.

We do want to bring it as we have a new DSLR (Canon EOS Rebel Xsi) and want to try and get some nice night shots out on deck.

Luckily, our next cruise is driveable, so we won't have to worry about it for a little while. :)
