Canadians..passport or not?

For the record and just incase anyone cares.....

 

My son,a Canadian citizen resides in Canada but visiting in U.S. and returning to U.S. address,for a week, after cruise, was only required to show birth certificate and photo I.D. in order to board.

 

Post cruise the customs officials did ask to see his passport(which he did not have on his person).I told them what he showed in order to board and after a phone call and quick check on computer they sent us on our way..but did suggest he always use a passport to travel.They also scanned his fingerprints.
