an ounce of prevention - BA warning

From a BA destination expert at tripadvisor.Worth repeating here....

The major newspaper had an article today (Feb 18) on safety problems around the bus/train station of Retiro, and scam problems with some taxis there. The safety problems are basically robberies. The taxi scam revolves around big peso notes. It seems some rogue drivers are intimidating passengers into turning over large notes "for inspection" at the start of the trip, switching them for smaller bills or counterfeit bills, and then dumping the passengers before the scam has been figured out. My description doesn't go into the complexities of the scam, but the bottom line is that if a taxi driver from Retiro engages you at all about how you're going to pay, whether your large bills have been "authenticated," or anything similar, run away.
