Eastern Caribbean Question

I am sailing on the Carnival Liberty in mid April and am wondering what the water conditions are like some say it is rougher that the western side I have done the western side twice and have not even noticed anything and am wondering how rough is rough?

If you are leaving from a Florida port, you might find eastern sailings a bit rougher than western sailings (depending on the time of year you go).

The gulf stream flows north along the east Florida coast and ships usually rock a bit traveling through it. That will happen shortly after leaving port. Depending on the weather, it's bad enough to make you notice it. However, once you're past it (it's relatively small in size) you've got smoother sailing.

In addition the Atlantic waters are often choppier than Gulf of Mexico waters, because they're more exposed to prevailing wind patterns. However that depends on how close you are to shore and what the weather is like.

One final thing to consider is tropical weather. Tropical storms & hurricanes are more likely to form in the Atlantic than the Gulf of Mexico early in the hurricane season (June-August). From September to October they're more likely to form in the Gulf of Mexico.

That much being said, if you did not get sea sick on a western Caribbean cruise, I don't think you'll have to worry about the eastern Caribbean. Unless, of course, you hit 15-20 foot seas.

It can be rough on any body of water--even lakes!!!! It's not the geographic location, as much as the weather patterns!

a good bit of the time an eastern cruise is in the bermuda triangle. not that that means anything. we once cruised thru the triangle on friday the 13th under a full moon. busted that myth for me.

We have sailed the Eastern and Western in April and there is really no difference...;)

 

Naturally, storms come up, but it really isn't much worse on either... Just takes 'fronts' longer to get to the 'western'..:rolleyes::)
