Pacificlander Posted April 7, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 7, 2004 I just read a review from someone who sailed on the Mercury last August. She wrote of choppy seas and queasiness being quite frequent. Is this something a little Dramamine will cure or should I see my doctor before we leave about one of those patches? catmand Posted April 7, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 7, 2004 Well........ok we sailed Alaska last year, the seas were smooth which I understand is usually the case on the inside passage but we did hit some swells upon return to Seattle. last month on the return from Mexico we had "choppy" seas the last full sea day south of San francisco. In both cases my DW AkaWanda took Dramamine and was fine. I take nothing (I am tough guy!). What to take is something that you have to decide as you will get all kinds of advice. I have never gotten car sick, amusement ride sick or any type of motion sick. Aka takes the pills as a precaution. I would not do the patch as it can have more side effects than the pills and with pills you can control the dose. Good luck and have a great time. ps: After posting I just noticed your signature, you have sailed before? I don't think the Alaska cruise would be much different than your other ones! We went last September. Pacificlander Posted April 8, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted April 8, 2004 Thanks! I didn't figure it should be alot different but our Pacific Ocean is alot more active than the Caribbean. I noticed your in Pittsburg, I work in Pittsburg! Live in Antioch, guess that makes us neighbors. Thanks again for the advice. catmand Posted April 8, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 8, 2004 You are most welcome, and yes we are neighbors. It is wonderful we can sail out of San Francisco. We disembarked the Mercury around 9am and we were home, unpacked and doing laundry (which kind of stinks) by 11:30. You are going to love the Mercury! Boo's Mom Posted April 8, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 8, 2004 ditto...what catmand said about the patch maybe being too strong. Although I have never used the patch.... I visited with the cruise ship's Dr. one time about the patch vs. other methods.... and he told me that he had conferenced with other cruise ship Dr's....and the consensus was that indeed the patch medicine had a lot of side effects that were making the passenger sick as well. I always go prepared with non-drowsy dramamine. Works like a charm for me.... with no side effects. high seas gal Posted April 8, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 8, 2004 We have done 4 Alaska cruises in the last four years. The only rough seas we had were on our first one in 2000. The ship left Seattle, headed west out past Victoria and Port Angeles, and into the Pacific headed north to Alaska. That was rough, and probably 70% of the passengers were ill. (I love to rock and roll, but my poor husband spend 30 hours in our cabin.) All our other Alaska cruises have gone both north and south bound in the inside passage, where the waters are pretty calm, at most a gentle motion. I agree with Boo's Mom that some of the excursions on small boats might be a little rough. If you haven't been to Alaska, you will find it breathtaking, awesome, incredible, absolutely beautiful ... especially going up (and back) the inside passage! Do enjoy your cruise ... and the excursions! Pacificlander Posted April 8, 2004 Author #7 Share Posted April 8, 2004 Thanks everyone. I'll put some non-drowsey Dramaine on my list of things to remember. This is our first trip to Alaska and I'm very excited. One of the factors in picking this cruise was that we disembark in San Francisco. Of course I guess that does mean I'll be doing laundry sooner (ick), but not having to fly half a day is a big plus.
