No Classical or Jazz on Glory???

BullDogChief

Recommended Posts

Ok, so we are booked to cruise on Glory October 17th and DW just read a review that said Glory does not offer classical or jazz music...

Please please please, anybody who has cruised recently on Glory inform us on this...we like other forms of music but she read a review that said music in the supper club was 80's light rock (George Michael and Air Supply :eek:...GROSS!!!!)

Please I really need to know because this will determine whether we cancel the booking or not (I hope Carnival does read these boards).....:(

I've heard live jazz in the cigar bar....wherever that is and some classical once in a while......usually at the afternoon tea on sea days.

As for the Supper Club, on Liberty in January, there was some sort of background music....don't recall as it was low enough not to interfere with conversation.

No live band while we were there...but we were out the door by 930pm...stuffed to the gills. Music could have started later.... If so, it will be of the "dance" variety, not classical.

There is (was?) a jazz trio in the cigar bar.

Last November on the Destiny the jazz trio was replace by a very loud salsa band. I don't know if this is the direction Carnival is moving or it was just the personal taste of Jorge the cruise director :mad:

Thanks for the responses...I am interested in the Glory's most recent cruises though...we like to dance before dinner(late seating) to the jazz trio in the cigar bar and listen to the classical music in the atrium.

Lately the reviews from Glory have been saying the cigar bar has a rock band and there is no classical music...and the music in the supper club has been lite rock...the George Michael and Air Supply music was mentioned in a recent review of the Glory.

We're not snobs but if there is going to be no jazz trio in the cigar bar and no classical music in the atrium then we won't be going on the cruise...music is very important to us...when we go to the supper club it doesn't have to be "live" music but at least some soft music...not 80's craprock...:(

Everyones got their tastes and theres a cruiseline to suit them. No classical or Jazz is why I liked carnival, on the glory last year we heard Ac/Dc and Guns N Roses in the buffet and classic rock in the blue bar every night. If you like classical or Jazz you might want to try Holland America or Celebrity. My last HAL cruise was like a Glenn Miller Orchestra marathon. The wheelhouse bar trio played to crowd of about 6 people every night, its a tough atmosphere for a band when the clientelle cant stay awake past 8:30.

As of the fall of last year, Carnival was phasing out the Classical and Jazz Trios as well as the supper club duos. If there are any left on any ship at this point then they are working out the end of their contract, but I believe that most ended in January or maybe the beginning of February.

They are bringing on Latin Trios or Country Duos to the replace the Jazz and Classical on some ships. Supper Club Duos will be replaced by piped in music. They still have the Calypso Duo on the Lido, the cocktail pianist in varying locations, the lounge band, the casino/promenade soloist, and the piano bar entertainer. The showband will also be found playing in some of the other lounges/decks. As will some of the other musicians

The was one part of the changes being made to the entertainment on the ship. It was spun to me as "keeping up with the times/Giving the customers what they want to hear/keeping up with competition" and "using the entertainment they have to their maximum potential"

Happy Cruising,

Laura

I just sent a message to John Heald asking him this very question...and if his answer confirms your I am afraid we will have to leave Carnival to the likes of snownyet...I cannot even formulate a civil response to that incredibly boorish and apparently unintelligent "person".

Thanks, Laura for your response! ;)

I can pretty much guarantee his response will confirm mine since he is the one that "spun" it to me at the Philly Pinata Event/Fiasco in November.

I happened to be on a ship when the mandate came down in October, and a musician friend (who has since left Carnival) told me about it.

It's not enough to drive me away from Carnival yet, since classical is fine, in small doses, and I am admittedly woefully under-educated about Jazz music. As long as they keep the piano bar going! With decent entertainers! LOL!

Happy Cruising,

Laura

I just went online yesterday, and so I'm not sure if I could contact your privately or not. Do you remember us we sat next to you at dinner on the Valor 7/8/07. We are going on the Liberty in June. Do you have any plans. Oh ya look at our picture.

We sailed the Glory the first week of January. I was a music major in college so I tend to pay attention to the live music and really enjoy all types of it. The jazz group was gone and had been replaced by a Latin Trio. I talked briefly with the violinist of the classical trio - they were not being replaced when their contract ended that month. I also noticed that the show band is much smaller (only six or so members now?) and that they are playing over a recorded backtrack some to fill out the sound from the missing horns.

Our tablemates at dinner visited the supper club and said the food was great but they were disappointed in the lack of live music. They said there wasn't even anything piped in the night they were there - it was just dead and thought the whole experience lacked the ambience it should have had.

One of the reasons I love Carnival is their live entertainment and the wide variety of music styles onboard - I really hope they realize that enough is enough on the cutbacks. :(

I would be misearble on those two lines - Carnival as a whole suits me and I believe they can offer music to suit all different tastes.

I may want to listen to classical at some points in my cruise, or be dancing to hip-hop to all hours of the night at other points. Not looking for a Glen Miller marathon - just some variety and jazz and classical have their place, even on Carnival. I am in my mid-thirties, am almost always up way past midnight, but also have many years of training in classical violin. Just because someone else likes classical or big band doesn't mean they need to be on HAl and can't stay awake past 8:30.

BullDogChief - The review your wife read must have been mine (I mentioned George Michael and Air Supply in the supper club:rolleyes:). On our past cruises, we were cigar-bar regulars for the jazz groups. (Okay, DH was there for the cigars, too.;)) We were on Glory 2/14. There was no jazz trio in the cigar-less cigar bar (cigars are limited to the sports bar on Glory); most nights there was a classic rock group called "Souldrive" in the Ivory Club. While we missed the jazz, I have to admit that Souldrive had a much larger crowd than I ever saw the jazz trio attract - and they had some good slow-dance music. From a business perspective, it seems like a good move. Similarly, no classical music in the atrium - piano music instead, as well as a duo called "Euphoria" that would have been the supper club entertainment in the past. I liked the classical groups, but the only time I really missed them was during tea time.

I have copies of the capers, if you'd like to see the entertainment schedule from our cruise - just let me know an e-mail address.

I had read before our cruise about the entertainment changes. I think the schedule is harder for the musicians - they're doubling up a lot more than they had in the past. However, from a passenger's perspective, I enjoyed all the entertainment Glory had to offer. I wouldn't cancel my cruise because of it, and in fact we have two Carnival cruises booked for July '09 and February '10. Nothing against George Michael and/or Air Supply, but I'd like a more varied selection of music in the supper club next time.;)

Yes the showband is smaller, the second such cut I believe to bring it down to the minimum. And the cut backs that came down in October, was met with a lot of grumbling and resulted in some people leaving. I definitely knew it was changing when I went on the Fantasy in February and saw the piano bar entertainer playing on the Lido deck!

Here's a tribute to the showband though, they are a bunch of very talented musicians. When they play in the lounges, it's not just big band or show music the stuff they do in the show room. They often put together a blues show or a jazz show, depending on the tastes and talents of the current members. It usually says in the caper what type of music they'll be doing.

You know I often read on John Heald's blog how proud Carnival is of their live music offerings and their iconic piano bars. I truly hope that is the case and Carnival looks at what they are doing before chopping off their nose to save more money and call it moving with the times and keeping up with their competitors. (And I do believe I just mixed my metaphors.... oh well).

PS - One of the other cutbacks I heard about was losing one dancer on each ship through attrition over the next year.

Hey there! Yes I remember your family! (although I admit I am terrible with names) Your son was a precocious hoot and a half, 11 going on 30, if I remember right! I've got no cruising plans at the moment, my own set of economic cutbacks, but I might be doing the 2 day Cruise to Nowhere on the Dream out of NYC in November.

You can always contact me at: divetrash at hotmail dot com.

How have you been?

Happy Cruising all,

Every showband I've seen on Carnival so far has had top notch musicians in it - these guys are good! One of the things we were so pleasantly surprised by on our first cruise and part of what hooked us was the quality of the musicians. We were expecting a much lower caliber and with one or two exceptions most of the musical acts we have seen on Carnival have been exceptional. And I can be picky sometimes about my music!

Hi, thanks for the Capers, DW said you sent them to her. ;)

You know, I love almost every type of music...the only two I don't care for being country and rap/hiphop...on a cruise, though, we love to listen to the classical trio in the atrium before dinner and then we love to dance to the jazz trio after dinner.

Doesn't mean we're old or any other insult our less than educated poster hurled at us...I rock out to music from Rob Zombie, Nonpoint, Drowning Pool, Three Days Grace, Apocolyptica, etc in my garage when I am working on the bikes or welding...but on a cruise we like jazz and classical so what is wrong with that?

Now DW is bugging the ever lovin' begeezus out of me to cancel the cruise and go to Chicago for our vacation...

As someone mentioned earlier. HAL would be a good place for you to go. Have cruised them five times. Do not have to be using a walker to be in the in group....LOL....I like the tradition of HAL. Jazz and some lighter rock before dinner in the Ocean Bar. At night a quartet of classical at dinner times and after in the (sorry can't remember that areas name) lounge. It is just outside the dining room. After diner the band in the Ocean Bar loosens up a pit and gets a little more into modern music. On the newer ships they now have a separate disco at night. On the smaller ships the do that in the Crows Nest at night......Oh yes.....Usually the piano bar player does a good job too.....
