What Type of Jacket in Early Sept?

What type of jacket should one bring for a trip to Alaska (including Denali, Kenai Fjords area, and cruise)? Is a rain jacket sufficient if you have a fleece and another layer? Or, is a winter coat recommended? We will be limited to space so trying to figure out what would be the best option.

:pLayers, layers, layers - rainproof jacket with hooded sweatshirt or fleece underneath. Sometimes it will be warmer than others - long sleeved tee, sweatshirt then rain jacket. You can peel off layers as the weather dictates. But be SURE the jacket is waterproof, not just water resistant. And don't settle for a rain poncho - it blows all around, the rain runs to the bottom then drips all over your jeans and you end up being wet from the knees down. Waterproof shoes or leather sneakers a must as well - or you can spray your sneakers (and jeans, I've heard!) with waterproof spray. No umbrellas - please!!! Bulky, gets in the way, and too hard to carry when you're juggling a backpack, camera case, purse or whatever.

Have fun - Alaska is spectacular!
