Hotels SJ.... Intercontinental?

We are cruising in July and are thinking of doing 2 nights prior and 1 night post. After perusing the SJ boards, I've seen the Intercontinental come up numerous times. I've read a number of reviews on Trip Advisor and have come up with some good and some bad. Any thoughts?

We are a family of 4 and will have our children (10 & 13) staying with us. Good family hotel? The beach looks great and the pool very appealing. We really want a place to unwind pre-cruise after our long day of travel from San Diego, good restaurants to walk to and some activity (beach/pool) for the kids. Is the location convienient to airport and cruise ports? Seems that taxis are the way to go, so that may not really be an issue.

Any other reccommendations for comfortable/family friendly nicer hotels? I've seen Marriott and Embassy mentioned frequently as well.

Thank you so much for any thoughts!!

We stayed at the Intercontinental for almost a week. The place is great and the beach and pool area is awesome. I've seen some great prices folks have gotten rooms for on Travelocity and priceline. We paid (gulp..) almost retail. Won't do that again.

By the way, we're in San Diego too and heading back in June for two weeks .
