Once on the ship how difficult is it to reserve a slot..lets say for two people?

When you board there is typically a Maitre d' at the entrance to the specialty restaurants the first afternoon. I know on some ships I have been able to call.

 

Let your main dining room staff and table mates (if any) know of your plans so they don't hold up service waiting for you.

The quick answer is, yes, it is easy to get a table for two at the specialty restaurants of Royal Caribbean. BUT, be aware some nights are easier than others. The first night of the cruise is easy. Also formal nights are easier as most people seem to prefer to eat in the main dining room.

 

Another wrinkle is that on some Royal Carib ships Portofino now offers an Italian wine tasting dinner on the first night that costs $50-plus per person price that includes the wine. That may make the first night tough for reservations. Also on some Royal ships, Portofino has one night set aside as Mystery Theater night, so that eliminates that night.

 

Also Royal Caribbean offers pre-cruise booking of reservations for Portofino and Chops on line, but I have never done that and don't know how well it works.
