Kay Green Posted April 12, 2009 #1 Share Posted April 12, 2009 Five of us will be staying a few days in Rome before our cruise. We would like to take the train to the port from the main train station. Should we make reservations on the train? Does anyone have any suggestions so this goes smoothly? Islandbuoy Posted April 12, 2009 #2 Share Posted April 12, 2009 Lots of reports that schlepping your bags is quite arduous. Most suggest a limo, with 5 of you it won't be that expensive!
jwds Posted April 12, 2009 #3 Share Posted April 12, 2009 Two types of train make this trip. Regional ®, for which reservations are not made, and ICplus, for which reservations can be made and may be mandatory. ICplus trains are less frequent and more expensive than R trains. A 1st class ICplus ticket is, I think, 11 euro while a second class R ticket is about 4.50 Euro. You can check schedules and confirm prices at trenitalia.com. There would be no need to buy a ticket before you get to Rome. If you don't have too much luggage it is an easy 15 minute walk from the Civitavecchia station to the port entrance. At the port entrance there are free shuttle buses that take you to the cruise ships. We travel with one rolling suitcase and one carryon/backpack per person and have had no problem doing this in both directions.
Twaincruisers Posted April 13, 2009 #4 Share Posted April 13, 2009 "Trains departing Roma Termini at 10:39, 11:09, 11:39, 12:39, and 13:39 all terminate in Civitavecchia and therefore should be right next to the station. 'Should' is the operative word here - after all, you are in Italy" We used the above info last fall from a fellow CC member and it worked out for us. I think we were on the 11:39 train and did not have to deal with the steps, disembarking right at the station. Towing luggage over cobblestones in some places wasn't a lot of fun but the walk was fairly pleasant. We took the ship's transfer back at the end of the cruise and it was an irritating mess!
