MrPete Posted April 18, 2009 #1 Share Posted April 18, 2009 Just watching the morning news while I'm getting my morning CC reading in, and there's a Carnival ship in the background as they are talking about the O/Chavez handshake. Really pretty, as it's talking up the whole left side of the screen past the news reporter, as the sun is coming up. It is the Port of Spain, Trinadad. Just wondering what ship it is. Could it be the Victory? What ship is currently sailing to this location? Or is Obama just taking a cruise?
caribbeanboy Posted April 18, 2009 #2 Share Posted April 18, 2009 Yes it's the Victory, I think she was the whole week in Trinidad. Also Caribbean Princess has been chartered and is also in Trinidad.

jetskier Posted April 18, 2009 #4 Share Posted April 18, 2009 Carnival Victory. FYI, the Elation has been chartered for a couple of months for the Olympics in Canada. 1/23/10-3/05/10 So ships can be pulled from service if the dollars are right. MrPete Posted April 18, 2009 Author #5 Share Posted April 18, 2009 I wonder if NBC or the media is using a portion of the ship for their reporters? Why else would they have used that angle? Good advertising. And, of course, all speculation.

Seems to me, they did the same thing a few years back for the Super Bowl in JAX.

MrPete Posted April 18, 2009 Author #11 Share Posted April 18, 2009 I'm trying to find this mornings, but I found last nights, at dusk, with the lights on: On this page bottom, third video, "CHUCK DODD, CUBA.....": http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17814579
sandij Posted April 18, 2009 #12 Share Posted April 18, 2009 That explains why I saw it on last nights news and again this morning, thought it was strange that a Carnival ship would overnite someplace like that. I too spent all the time looking at the ship and imaging what was going on onboard.
Cruise Cat Posted April 18, 2009 #13 Share Posted April 18, 2009 Read an article on this the other day. They are housing "the international press" since they only have so much hotel space there. After it is over, the ships are going on short cruises. The proceeds from that go to the T/T government to help defray costs.
Cruise Cat Posted April 18, 2009 #14 Share Posted April 18, 2009 http://www.grenadabroadcast.com/content/view/4882/1/ April 13, 2009 -- The Carnival Victory and the Caribbean Princess are both under two-week, dockside charter in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, to house staff and international press during the Fifth Summit of the Americas. President Barack Obama is among the leaders of the 34 member countries of the Organization of America States attending the meeting, which focuses on economical, social and political development of North, Central and South America. The event is expected to attract more than 5,000 visitors to Trinidad. The ships were chartered by the Tourism Development Company of Trinidad & Tobago in order to supplement the 1,700 hotel rooms in Port-of-Spain, according to Landry & Kling, a Miami-based specialist in meetings at sea. Landry & Kling, which arranged the charters, said that 3,000 additional rooms were made available on the 2,758 passenger Carnival Victory and the 3,100-passenger Caribbean Princess. The summit takes place from April 17 to 19, but the ships also will be used for pre-summit and parallel events, including meetings and sessions. Then the ships will embark on four-day, post-summit cruises with all revenue going to the government of Trinidad & Tobago to defray the cost of the charters.
