Not too many from beaches, though. Would have had more photos, except my husband dropped my camera and we never made it to 7 Mile Beach. Instead, we headed out to a camera store to purchase a new camera.

Looks like a rainy day in New Orleans.

 

 

A discontinued Canon S230 digital with waterproof case. Tend to post process photos for color adjustment with Adobe photoshop (let it auto-fix). If I actually knew what I was doing, they would be better.

Great pictures zydecocruiser. It looks as if they're making pretty good progress getting things back together. It looked pretty rough on the sandbar, certainly moreso that the two times we were there. Was it hard to get out of and into the boat?

It was a little rough - the shipbased stingray tours all cancelled! No real need to other than some nervous insurance carriers, I guess.

 

Getting off the boat was easy. I jumped! Or you could sit on the back and push yourself off. You don't really want to climb down a ladder wearing fins (or back out), but at the sandbar you can do that because you aren't wearing fins.

 

Getting back on wasn't bad. At the snorkel stops, holding onto the boat take one fin off at a time and hand it up to one of the crew members, then climb up.

 

Lesson learned: With the boat moving with the waves, the ladders are free to move back and forth. If you aren't paying attention, they could swing and wack you across the shins. That kind of smarts. It only took me once to learn that lesson and it wasn't a problem the other two stops. I would just hold on to the boarding ladder and make sure it wasn't swinging towards me while I was trying to get my feet on it (or at least factor its movement in). Once on the ladder, it really wasn't any different. With weight on it, it wasn't free swinging.

 

I didn't see anyone need help, but the crew was available to help anyone in need.

 

Standing on the sandbar, the waves were more of a nuisance than anything else. Tended to cloud up the water, but it was still pretty clear.

 

Under the same circumstances or even worse, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Already planning a trip for March.

Thanks Zydecocruiser. Those photo's were great. We were there the same day,sailing on the Mariner. Our friends went on the Sting Ray City tour in the p.m., and the waves and surf were just as rough. Many people got really sick. I believe that is why ship tours were cancelled. We took the island tour to Hell and Turtle Farm for the first time which was a good way to experience the damage. Seven Mile beach front was damaged a lot. The trees were stripped bare in most places. I don't have digital photo's but one taken at the Governors house shows only a few branches on only one side. It looks like someone took a saw and shaved one side of the tree. Due to the lack of vegetation, the beachside just did not look as beautiful as it used to be. No tall Palm trees to lie under in the shade.

Zydecocruiser forgot to mention one other tiny tidbit of information....1st..remember his shin lesson! 2nd..Waves come over the top of your head with a storm brewing..so that means you suck in ocean instead of air when using your breathing tube. Forget the tube and just hold your breath and snorkle. Unless you like a lunch of ocean water! Lots of folks upchucking their ocean lunch on our boat.

I still don't think it was that rough - Jamaica the day before was worse. I've even fished from my float tube in worse. But I have snorkeled a lot. Holding your breath is a no no for divers, but ok for snorklers.

 

They make dry snorkels for people that can't tell the difference between water and air. Even in calm water I sometimes turn too far trying to see something and end up sticking the top of my snorkel under the surface. The lesson to be learned here is to stop breathing in and blow the water out. You shouldn't be breathing so hard that you can't stop in time. I don't like that liquid air. Now if it was beer...

 

Maybe next time you can take the parasol out of one of your drinks and make your own dry snorkel?

 

That must have been your side of the boat that was hurling cause I didn't notice any on mine. Or pehaps they are professionals and very discreet?

How deep is the water where these boats take you for snorkeling? We may have someone with us that is timid around deep water & can't swim well. But, 4 - 5 feet deep would likely be fine.

Oh, no need to reply. I've been reading this answer elsewhere. I just needed another 30 minutes on the board and there the answers were. :)
