Hotel recommendation

Doing a 2 night pre cruise. Cruise is in 5/2010 on POA and this will be our 2nd time to Hawaii. NCL is using Wakiki Marriott which is across the street from the beach at a cost of $598 for 2 nights for 2 people. I would like to stay on the beach. Last time we were at a Hilton which was very nice but I would like to change things up a little. I feel I could find a hotel and book on my own, do my own transfers and save some $$. Does anyone have any hotel recommendations? We are two females traveling and one is an elderly lady in her 70's.

Thanks,

My DW and I like to stay at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel on Kapuhulu opposite the zoo. It's an older hotel, but if you get the right room, your balcony will look out onto Diamond Head in front of you and Queen's beach to the right. Queen's beach is just a short block away and it is very uncrowded. The balcony rooms in most cases come with a full kitchen, just in case. Check it out, you might be able to get a good bargin on a Diamond Head view room now.
