roxsolw100 Posted May 17, 2009 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2009 First time for us to visit Sitka. Is there an excursion that you would recommend to see the Russian/American history and the Raptor Center, or can these be done individually? Not looking for any boat excursions, but do want to take in all that Sitka's history has to offer. Including the puffins. Thanks.

I'm not sure you can see the puffins without a boat trip, but you can definitely visit the Russian Orthodox church and Raptor Center on your own. If you like to walk you can get to both on foot, as well as visit the National Park and other points of interest between. We started by walking through town and visiting the church and then walked along the waterfront out to the National Park and then to the Raptor Center. It is a long walk out to the Center, so if you prefer you can also take the local shuttle that makes stops at all the points of interest.
Budget Queen Posted May 18, 2009 #3 Share Posted May 18, 2009 No you can NOT see puffins without a specific boat tour. You can not count on viewing from ship tours. The Native (Council)??? runs city tours http://www.sitkatribe.org/ which, a while ago for my family was excellent. In the past, they wore distinctive jackets that were an united nation. Bring a pin from home and give it to them. :)
