Nude art - please help us get excited again!!!

I just find it kind of funny that the op is so worried about his kids seeing a boob in art work and says nothing about kids playing violent video games. America gets so worked up about 1 second of Janet Jacksons wardrobe malfuction in the super bowl but says nothing about the fact that when a child turns eighteen years old, he or she will witness on television (with average viewing time) 200,000 acts of violence including 40,000 murders.

Or the fact that since the 1950s, more than 1,000 studies have been done on the effects of violence in television and movies. The majority of these studies conclude that: children who watch significant amounts of television and movie violence are more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior, attitudes and values.

But if a kid sees a boob the world will come to a end.

Something is wrong with this picture!!!!!

BOOBS.....Can ya dig it?.......We can Dig it!!! in the theme of shaft............

It is clear that the OP has very set ideas about nudity and how he wants to expose or rather shield his children from it. That is his right. And I agree he did not ask for child rearing advice...but in response to his 1st question, "Are the photos really that bad?"

Please define "bad".

Thanks to all for your feedback.

Max, I do look for opportunities to educate my boys, but as a responsible parent I can't see trying to teach an early 9 year old boy about art with a penus and nipples staring him in the face.

Trock, as I mentioned in my update, we did take them to Disney 4 years ago and they had a ball.

At ages 9 and 12, the boys have travelled a lot (US and international). We have taken advantage of many opportunities to educuate them. As I said before, if we had know (or were given the opportunity to do so sooner) then we would have not scheduled this ship (it would have been a no brainer for me), but since Carnival was forced to change their itinerary (I don't blame them) and they forced us to make a decision in 3 days, we didn't have much time to research. We basically spent 2 day trying to find an availbale cruise.

BTW, I was not able to get to the link.

HTownMC,

Over the years we've taken our boys to beaches where topless women were in abundance and a few where clothing was optional and they didn't pay attention to what people around them were wearing or not wearing. I paid attention, but not in a way that would draw the boys attention. ;)

We sailed on Carnival Legend last month and it has nude and semi nude art every where and our boys who are now 14, 12, and 8 never gave the art they saw a second thought. We've sailed multiple Carnival ships and though there may have been nude art on them, I honestly don't recall. If not for your post, I wouldn't likely remember the art on Legend for much longer either.

Go on your cruise and view the art, but don't make a big deal out of it and your children will do the same as you do.

The Op mentions that he is a responcible parent and tries to educate his children. Which I think is great.

I say go on the cruise and if the kids even bring up the nude art work, then explain to them. The artists found these people beautiful and wanted to paint their pictures. That there is nothing to be embarressed or ashamed about and that they are not doing anything dirty.

Stop the stigma right in its tracks. You cover their eyes and steer them away from it, they will know its something taboo and want to see it even more.

I have 2 teens and a 20 yr old myself, I have never been a parent to use stupid baby words or silly explanations to explain things to my kids.

Depending on the age they asked I will give an explanation that is age appropriate . But I tried to me as honest as possible

Questions:

Are the photos really that bad?

Are there ways to bypass them?

We will be on the verandah deck. Are there any nude photos on that deck? What about on the deck where the kids club is located?

These are the only questions the OP wanted answered - not a whole discussion on how to raise his children. I really like this board and have found it very helpful in many situations. However - if I was the OP I would not come back to this board because of how rude people were to him. It's a board about cruising - not raising children. He just wanted some information on the photos.

And other then showing some pics so OP could decide how "bad" they were for himself. I didn't see anyone take the time to answer his questions. They seem pretty simple if you've been on the ship. Are they are on the Veranda deck? Are they around the kids club and can you get from one place to another without passing them?

I agree.

The OP just asked for some information so that he can prepare for what the kids may see.

And we don't know this family or this particular child.

There may be some very valid reason why the parent might believe that this particular child should have limited exposure to certain things.

Were the photos posted the actual art work from the ship?

Are they all copies of masterpieces and such?

I think (not trying to put words in you mouth...lol) you meant to say: 'Not sure why-being nude is not pornographic' ;)

Just looking out for you...not trying to read your mind. Sorry if I read you worng!

You're right! that's what I was trying to say-being nude should not be considered porn. Thank you for looking out for me! I can use all the help I can get!

So lets sum it up from all the posts so far, if you don't want to cruise on a ship full of nude art you are an ignorant prude.

No.

If you equate reproductions of great works of art by Michelangelo and Botticelli to porn on a computer, then you're an ignorant prude (or worse).

See to me believing someone that doesn't see the "beauty" in nude art is ignorant or prudish is the defininition of ignorance. Art is nothing if it's not subjective. Not everyone will appreciate all types and art. Some will offend, some will amaze, but no reaction will be the same for everyone, that's the beauty of art.

If someone doesn't want to be exposed (no pun intended) to nude art then that is their right and they should not be bashed for it. No more then someone that doesn't like modern art and thinks it's just crap painting. It's all in the interpretation and we are all welcome to have our own interpretation of art, that's what it's for.

NO, that is not all that he did. He prudishly equated the art to Internet pornography.

We do not want to expose our sons to this type of stuff. From what I can see, this is the same stuff I'm blocking from their computers.

This is a public message board. If someone is going to give their opinion on a particular matter, then they better be prepared for rebuttals - even if they didn't ask for them. I have just as much right to comment on his opinion as he had to post it in the first place.

I had said last night that I wasn't coming back, but I was just amazed, disturbed, etc. about the flood of responses I got from this one post. I was just curious and had to take another look. Honestly, it's sad, but I knew as soon as I put the word 'nude' in my subject that I would get a ton of responses, but I had no idea that I STILL WOULD NOT GET MY QUESTION answered. It just shows you the type of world we are living in. I'll just continue to pray for the the world we are living in.

BTW to the others, Although my sons have seen many parts of Mexico (including Cabo, Jamaica and man other part of the Carribbean, Hawaii, etc. we have no plans of taking them to Europe until they are in their late teens.

SEE YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't tell if you are intentionally being obtuse, or if you are simply missing the point even though it has been emphasized several times by various posters.

The OP is NOT being bashed for not seeing the beauty in nude art or not wanting to be exposed to it. He is being bashed for equating it to Internet pornography.

There is no interpretation to be made here. This is not "artistic differences."

There are no gray areas here. This is a simple black and white issue.

If someone considers Michelangelo's statue of David or Botticelli's Birth of Venus to be equivalent to Internet pornagraphy, then that person is a priggish ignoramous.

ashcroftjustice.jpgBetter stay away from C-Span and News too

ROTFLMAO! CLASSIC! BRILLIANT!

Having grown up in DC, attending all the museums and GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS, this classic nude art is everywhere. Hope the family isn't planning on taking the kids to DC anytime soon...that could raise a real "responsible parent" dilema - educate the children about the governemt of their country or shield them from all nudity. Wow - hate to have to make that choice!

My DS are 5 and 11, and I would take them on this ship in a heartbeat. I wouldn't think twice about the art, and if they started to giggle, I'd look at them like they'd lost their minds, and ask them what was so amusing? And the 5 yo is very interested in boobs. But I am not going to get wigged out about it - 50%+ of the world has them, he might as well get used to seeing them at every turn.

Trust me, I completely understand with what you are saying. I however think it's a ignorant thing to say. That's my opinion. To think everyone sees things the same way you do is short sighted. Not everyone sees the beuaty in nude art and to them nudity is nudity, doesn't matter who created it. Doesn't mean they are stupid, it means they feel differently then you do.

Don't confuse liking or disliking a particular form of art, this case being the Renaissance period in question, with a 'classification'.

Porn is created with the sole purpose of sexual excitement or stimulation.

Looking at Botticellis, Raphaels et al, without opining if you/me like or dislike them, we can clearly see that they are works of art, not in a gratuitous nature. Not my cup of tea, but that is only from an asthetic viewpoint.. The 'masters' are not offensive -they do not equate to porn.

The "penis and nipples exposure fear" and "this is what I block on their computers" are statements of ignorance. The works of art is not liken to a XXX website...

The responses (some) are not meant to chase the OP away but hopefully to enlighten each other, and to think.. ... just like what art is supposed to do.;):)

It is his right to cruise or not cruise the Pride, to be exposed or not to art.. my initial response replied as such.. He should cancel and stick to his convictions.

The OP didn't hear what he wanted, which were more responses agreeing with him.

Happy Memorial Day

I don't think the lack of fig leaf is the "biggest" problem!;)

I think you got so many responses because you equated art to the porn you block on the computer. That statement probably offended alot of people.

Pat

Again, I don't block it because it's porn. I block it because they are showing things that are PRIVATE. Again, I don't teach my kids that it's nasty, I TEACH THEM THAT IT IT PRIVATE (NO MATTER WHO IT BELONGS TO). It doesn't matter if the art is of someoee we don't know. Again, I teach them that theirs, mine, Jack's, Jill's, etc. IS PRIVATE. That means that IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE TO SEE (ART, PORN, ARE WHATEVER OTHER WORD YOU WANT TO CALL IT. IT IS PRIVATE. IT IS PRIVATE. Again, I didn't say it was nasty. I said it was PRIVATE.

I don't understand why a father not wanting his children viewing nudity throughout their family vacation is a bad thing

Just because 'it's out there elsewhere, you can't avoid it' doesn't mean he has to walk them past a nude painting everytime he goes to his stateroom if he doesn't want to. That is his right as a parent!

I personally take a different stance on it. Like others have posted, I agree that as a parent you are the one to help form your child's views on things. Nudity = bad and only sexual, well then you have a major problem IMO..

BUT I still don't see why not wanting his children to view nudity IN ANY FORM, whether it be art or porn, is negative

I feel bad for Eve! LOL

Just thinking about our last cruise.. better keep those kids away from the Lido deck.. some of those men have bigger (exposed) boobs than some of the woman.. The kid would really become confused..

I myself have seen porn on hbo, seen boobs on prime time tv, and watched people make out in the streets that SHOULD have been behind closed doors. But I've never seen porn in works of art.

My son and now my granddaughter (who is 9) all can go to a museum and appreciate the art for what it is and not giggle or think they are seeing something "dirty".

I guess it is what it is, depending on your outlook of it, but it's not intended as porn, it's beauty in the artists eyes and those of us that appreciate their art.

A very good place for you to avoid would be the port at Panama, there is a awesome indian tribe that come dressed in native dress and sell beautiful handcrafts to the tourists, the females are topless and you know what? There were kids all over there, no one once looked ashamed or stared.

It's one of my favorite places to buy art and handcrafts ( I carried a roof tile with a beautiful picture painted on it home ( don't trust the airlines)

I bet that the kids would not even notice if mom and dad didn't show any feelings one way or another.

JMO, Carole

That's what I was wondering! Holy cow did this thread go in a million different directions.

To the OP, come over to the family board. We were having a calm discussion on the clothing worn in the shows. We would have no problem adding this into the discussion. :D
