Pregnancy and cruising

Hello all,

My DW will be 14 weeks pregnant on the Elation next month. We are saving a ton of $$$ on drinking and excursions we can't do.

I was wondering if anyone knows if: a) we need to notify Carnival of her "status" and, b) does the Carnival spa offer pregnancy massages?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

(only 25 more days to go!!!)

Check your documents.

I've not been pregnant on Carnival but can tell you that my Royal Caribbean documents say that pregnancy is considered a medical condition and the cruise line may ask for a doctor's note before alllowing you to board.

They also only express reluctance if a woman is 27 weeks (or further along) so you should be just fine!

Don't know whether or not Carnival has a similar line in their information---so I can only say again, check your documents.

Happy sailing!

Based on your itinerary (Western Caribbean), the one thing I would recommend is that whatever activities you decide on, DW should eat well and drink plenty of fluids. Being out in the heat can dehydrate you easily when expecting. If you have any concerns about specific activities, give your ob/gyn a call, just to make sure it's okay for DW. Generally, 14 weeks isn't a bad time to travel - you're past the 1st trimester morning sickness (if DW had that) and before the "I can't possibly get any bigger" stage. (Yes you can - and will - get bigger!:D ) From a mom of three...I'd be happy to help with any other questions!

I sailed when I was four months pregnate and had no problems at all. I rested a little more but other than that, went out and enjoyed myself. Just refrained from having any alcholic beverages... and today, our blessing is sailing on her second cruise at 4 years old and can't wait!

Thank you everyone for your feedback.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the ports given her "delicate condition?"

We thought pretty much just getting off at each port and walking around instead of any of the excursions. Most of them are not pregnant friendly.

Her doctor has suggested that she not eat anything off the boat just in case.

I cruised last September while 18 wks pregnant and had no problems whatsoever. I will be cruising again in 40 or so days & will be 21 wks pregnant this time. As for excursions, we did a beach tour in Cozumel, a boat tour in Belize & walked the city in Key West. It was a wonderful combination of excursions & I was feeling quite well the entire trip. We just tried to stay away from any of the really active excursions (ie Climbing Dunns River Falls, Cave Tubing, etc...) I hope I am as lucky this time around. I'm anticipating a slight difference since this time we'll be taking our 11 month old too! Good luck to your wife, I'm sure it will be a very relaxing vacation.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'll be 22 weeks pregnant on my cruise. I asked my doctor about sea sickness. She suggested I get some seabands just in case.

We are planning to snorkel some which the doctor said would be just fine.

I think a cruise will be the perfect place for a pregnant woman. Lots of food and bathrooms nearby.

Can't wait! :)

Carnival DOES NOT offer Pre-Natal Massages.

I just sailed on the Imagination and one lady at our dinner table was 12 weeks pregnant. The lady and her husband were able to get the couples massage. They were told this was the only massage offered to pregnant woman. She loved it!!

I would not suggest getting a massage on the cruise if you are pregnant. There are trigger points in the body (around the feet) that can trigger contractions by stimulating the uterus - wouldn't risk that one.

Even though you don't need to inform Carnival in advance, I would take along a doctors note confirming how far along she is just in case they ask.

TRUE

since some evidence suggests that vigorous stimulation of the feet may induce uterine contractions.
