Carnival Ecstasy Poop/Feces/Sewer Smell....

Sounds like it's luck of the draw and probably due to passengers flushing things they shouldn't. I certainly hope we don't encounter this for our upcoming cruise. We're taking my mom on her first cruise (a belated 60th B-day gift). We were originally scheduled for December and I was looking forward to the changes but we needed to move it up as we're now expecting our third child at the end of the year.

Two things here.

First, we had issues with an odor outside our stateroom on the Glory about two years ago. The cabin steward smelled it, the sanitation office smelled it, the plumber smelled it. Everyone admitted the smell was there and it was something they probably could fix very readily in port. So that was that. We just did not let it ruin the cruise for us. We were in a main deck ocean view, so one would think this was not related to "being in the bilge".

Second, the reason the Fantasy class ships are receiving this heavy renovation is that they were specifically designed with shorter cruises in mind. Their passenger density is higher than the other classes of ships that Carnival operates, but they are very well laid out so one hardly notices any crowding. Why replace an asset with what would be pretty much the same thing? The official company view is that the Fantasy class will have an added life expectancy of about 20 years.

We just got off the Fantasy Saturday morning.:( I only noticed the smell in the hallways when we were docked in NO and then again docked in Progreso and Cozumel. It seemed to completely disappear once we were at sea.

It certainly wasn't bad enough to stop me from cruising again!

Congratulations on your upcoming reason not to cruise for a time.....

I really haven't seen this problem mentioned on reviews, which is a good thing. We are taking the kids (adults) for their very first cruise in February on the Ecstacy. I sure hope we don't have that problem. We are all going to be on the main deck. Will this matter?

Scott F:

Which deck were y'all on?

We were on M deck, mid ship. Smell was worst in the casino and at the main entrance to the formal dining. From what I could tell, it was mostly mid-ship.

I guess if you want the convenience of going out of Galveston, you have to deal with crappier choices in ships (pun intended).

I'll fly to FLA or LA next cruise. Probably take RC for a change of pace after two carnival cruises.

I think some people forget what a bathroom can smell like after it's been used by someone who has been eating rich food. That stink has NO WHERE to disippate.

So when I'm walking down a hall, and I smell that familiar smell, I usually know what someone has been doing in the vicinity.

What a revelation in such close quarters.

Probably a good time to remind passengers of things they should never put in the commode on a ship:

  • Diapers
  • Condoms
  • Feminine Products
  • Flushable Wipes

Basically, if isn't human waste or TP, it does not flush.

This is a reply one one of your nono's for the commode.....The second one actually. I assume you are saying to put these in the garbage can? I don't know about other rooms but ours not once had a garbage bag in it. I think that would be nasty to do that, even wrapped up in tp.

No Pete...this is not the same thing.

When I sailed on the Fantasy, the sewage odor was bad and the WATER on the ship had that same smell and drinking tap water on this cruise was totally out of the question. The iced tea was even undrinkable.

This is not something that happens when someone eats rich food and then 'let's it go' in their bathroom.

Not saying it can't happen, but when people start jumping of the bandwagon, you get a sense that all ships stink.

I experienced what you describe on one ship, but I don't remember which one. It was Fantasy class though, but I haven't been on one in over 11 years. It wasn't seweage, but that ship smell WAS in the water as well.

I hear you - and trash can liners surely would be an improvement, but with all the cost-cutting onboard I don't think we will see any.

Actually, condoms being something that cannot break down in water would be one of the worst things you could flush, and the likely cause of many a backup.

Actually, that is true off ship, too. Example: my parents have a lake house where the sewer line is uphill from their lot. They have a pump which takes the waste and moves it uphill. Part of that pump is an impellor which pulverises waste. However, it cannot handle tough latex.

When it stopped working, and a plumber was called, the cause was a condom fouling up the impellor. One family member was staying there with his wife so it was obvious who did it - and he caught the devil for it.

Now, there are trash cans with nice little signs on them in every bathroom in his house!

So back to the ship - nasty as it may seem, it is even nastier to clog up you commode and up to 50 of your neighbors, so please do use the trash can. It won't stay there long as the stewards are good about cleaning them.

The bathrooms have little paper feminine product bags stored under the sink. I would assume they'd want you to dispose of your condom in one of them instead of flushing it.

If you're really adventurous, just use it AS a condom. It eliminates one step.

This was my fourth cruise and the first time we've had to deal with it. It was the low point each and every day. I hope it's not an issue on newer ships. I do not plan to cruise the older ships any longer.

I experienced this issue in some areas of The Carnival Splendor (although not to the extend the OP did) , and it is one of the newest ships in the fleet.

I'm not sure if there IS a way of avoiding the problem completely...
