Just how formal is Celebrity?

Bluto

Recommended Posts

I am sailing with my wife for the first time on 4/24/04 on Century. I hear a lot about the dress code on Celebrity. Can anybody tell me just how formal it is, and what is expected on deck. I have read enough on the dining rooms, but is the rest of the ship as formal?
Thanks for any help....

I don't think Celebrity is any more formal than any other line. I see mostly tee shirts, shorts, and sandals or sneakers during the day. Maybe a slightly higher percentage of tuxes & suits in the evening, but plenty of people dress down in the theater & casino.

No formality at all during the day on deck or in the dining rooms. Shorts and t-shirts are fine anywhere on the ship. You're not supposed to wear bathing suits or go barefoot in the buffet but I saw people without shoes and people in bathing suits without coverups in there.

Short, t-shirts, slacks, capri's etc. plus bathing suits with a coverup are the dress of the day. However, people wearing tank tops and shorts are being turned away from the main dining room at breakfast & lunch. Put on a neat shorts outfit if you choose to dine in the main dining room. Formal Evening are tux or suit for him and long gown or cocktail dress or formal pants ensemble for her.
Smart casual is nice summer weight slacks and shirt for him, pants or casual dress/jumper or skits outfit for her including nice capri sets.

The shorter Caribbean sailings tend to be a bit more casual than longer sailings (14+ days). There is a different passenger load for the longer sailings, they tend to be a bit older and a bit more affluent... those that are retired or can be away from work for over two weeks. Even having said all that, even on 7 day cruises on the Formal nights the ship will be very formal, and even on casual nights people will be very neatly dressed. During the day, pretty much anything goes!

We found that Infinity in Alaska was far more formal than Infinity to Hawaii. When we sailed Alaska on her, at least half of the men or more wore tuxedos on formal night. Even casual nights in the dining room were dressier. I think a lot has to do with the area you are sailing to.

I've seen several references to Caribbean cruises but what about Alaska?

This question really confuses me. Does not one dress appropriately fro the occasion regardless of the location. Why would anyone go to ANY dining room dressed like they just got of the pool or changing the oil in their car.

I just do not understand people. Common sense dictates, but then again maybe it is less common that most would assume.

My rule of thumb is, if you have to ask, then maybe you should stay home. No flame intended, just find this topic weird.

Thanks for the replies. I guess hockeydad doens't understand that one can hear that jeans maybe okay to wear in the dining room, and others think a shirt and tie is needed. That is why I asked.

Bluto, I think your question is very valid. If people haven't cruised before, how are they supposed to know what the consencis is for casual? A lot also depends on what part of the country you are from. Here in L.A. casual might mean anything. And I do mean anything.
Again, I would rather have someone ask and be prepared, than not ask and feel out of place. Cruising is for everyone!

Bluto,
You've asked a valid question for someone that may not be a seasoned cruiser. The other posters have answered your inquiry, but I just wanted to say that I think that HockeyDad was a bit rude to you by saying ...

"My rule of thumb is, if you have to ask, then maybe you should stay home."

This subject and any other topic is what this board is about. Have a fabulous cruise!

The daily paper in your stateroom will tell you the dress for the dining room that evening. If you choose just to bring sportwear & no dresses, suits, shoes; that is fine with us but you are BUFFET or STATEROOM dining. No dress codes for either. No party either on any formal night. Folks in this manner would not want a X cruise, but a FREESTYLE which has no dress code.

Common sense when it comes to fashion?

Would common sense dictate that shorts are not allowed but a mini skirt which barely covers the necessary is okay? In a lot of cases though that is the situation.

I personally appreciate that someone would go to the trouble to find out what is considered appropriate rather than risk embarrassing themselves or making other people uncomfortable.
I'd rather cruise with someone who took the trouble to find out rather than someone who just assumes what they think is 'common sense' is right and everybody else must agree.

Rosie is right...on the Mercury we never felt an obligation to dress a certain way. We shared the space when we were in jeans with couples in formal attire (not the dining room of course ) But other public spaces. On the other hand, when we were dressed for "the prom", we passed by others in shorts and swimsuits in the hallways. I can honestly say pretty much anything goes aside from shorts and jeans in the dining room but I wore jeans the last night to dinner (I know, I know... ). Do not let the dress code thing put you off. Cruising is the most awesome, wonderful thing in the entire world! ~Christine

With us & 11 Princess cruises and late luggage arrival (after dinner), we would wear the clothes we arrived in to dinner & the last night we wore the clothes we were flying home in, since our luggage was picked up before dinner. So casual is first & last nights & whenever else. The formal is formal & I love it, treated like a queen! Then Country Club informal is also nice as I dress up satin slack with glitter tops, etc.

Oh Gardencat, you will love this. KLM lost our luggage between Amsterdam & Venice. Luckily the Golden was docked overnight in Venice & Princess flew us in so we could spend the night FREE & have 2 days in Venice. 5PM the 2nd day was departing time & still we had no luggage & it was formal night. I went to the Pursers office to inquire if our luggage fromn KLM that was to arrive at the ship by 3PM made it. He was not given a adequate answer. So he arranged tuxes for both of us, as they had no evening gowns for sale. I was wearing a morning jacket & NO pants, just black dress pants from a performer with black hose & heels. Then I could dance on stage if I wanted to I was told. FOLKS DROPPED THEIR FORKS WHEN THE MATRE D ESCORTED ME TO OUR TABLE. MEN WERE SMILING ;-) Great photo with our friend Captain Bernie too.

It was either that or toga night with the bed sheets. But after dinner, shows, casino, when we got back to the stateroom there was 8 staterooms' worth of luggage.
