puddytat Posted July 4, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 4, 2009 We are going on a Diamond Princess going all the way to Asia. The ship will stop at Whittier. What can we do there without going to Angorage. Since the ship only has excursions that suits people who is going to disembark from Whittier, we are also looking for private tour and if you can provide some information. Thank you. Chenega Posted July 5, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 5, 2009 Other than walking around a very small town, there's not much to do here except go on one of the day boat cruises.
ARRTrain Posted July 5, 2009 #3 Share Posted July 5, 2009 Everything is pretty much closed for the winter, when that ship comes in. The weather could be rainy in mid-Sept. The ship usually leaves around 5:30pm on the Asia trip. So you won't have much time.
nadonative Posted July 5, 2009 #4 Share Posted July 5, 2009 There are day boat Glacier cruises you can take in Whittier. It's a small town and not toooo much happening.
puddytat Posted July 5, 2009 Author #5 Share Posted July 5, 2009 Checked into boat trip and they all come back after ship leaves, so scratch that idea. Well, just walk a little bit and treat it as a sea day. Thanks for the information.

gertz Posted July 7, 2009 #7 Share Posted July 7, 2009 There is a little interesting museum there and not to far from the dock. It is devoted mostly to Whittier, WW2, and the islands. We along with our 13 year old GD found it to be enjoyable and educational. If it is not raining too bad you might give it a try. sswbeanie Posted July 8, 2009 #8 Share Posted July 8, 2009 if you have time to rent a car, there is a wildlife center that houses rehabilitated non-releasable animals and is very nice, you can drive through or park and walk through. there are spots to pull over as you drive through to see all the animals. we did it as part of a ship excursion at the end of our northbound cruise and really enjoyed it but didnt feel we had enough time there (1 hr) then again, i'm the type of person who could spend all day watching the bears pacing
