bellagirl Posted July 15, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 15, 2009 Hi-We're docking in Portofino and wanted to take the ferry to see some of Cinque Terre. In looking at some of the websites, I'm concerned that the ferries may not run as late as mid-Nov. which is when we will be there. Does anybody have any info about the ferries and their departure times, locations, etc. Much appreciated! Shelly:)
CintiPam Posted July 15, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 15, 2009 They definitely do not run from Portofino to the Cinque Terre in mid-November, only through September. But if you have enough time in Portofino, you probably can catch the train from Santa Margherita Ligure, which runs hourly to La Spezia and then take the local trains from there. A good source for practical information of this type is Rick Steves' 2009 Italy guidebook, available at your local library.
nparmelee Posted July 15, 2009 #3 Share Posted July 15, 2009 How much time do you have in Portofino? I don't think the Cinque Terre ferries run that late in the season, if they do, they don't run very often. You have to factor in tender time (there is no dock for cruise ships in Portofino), and in November then take the bus over to Santa Margarita Ligure, and then train time and then the same for the way back. Our day in Portofino we took the bus over to Santa Margarita Ligure, explored there, then did the walking path back to Portofino, but we also had a day where we tendered to La Spezia so we went to the Cinque Terre from there. In November, you may be better off with a ship excursion to Cinque Terre if that is your must see.
