Hello all,

We are planning a 15 day voyage over the Holidays on QM2 (DD and I) and although we have a ton:o of formal gowns we are curious about the themed balls and the "norm" for these events. Does one actually don a Ball Gowns (we do have them ,but are a bear to pack given size and shape of the garments) or is the standard simply a floor length formal dress? How "into it" do they get for the Grand Masq Ball ? The Buccaneer Ball?

We have already chosen formals for the Black/White/Xmas and New Years Balls so at least those are done!:D

Thanks for the info!

Regular formal will do, the so called theme is just that so called. Theme for about 45 mins in Queens Room around 10.30p.m.

I spent money for a Masquerade ball, on one cruise, and found it a total bust, No masks except for that short time in Queens Room and same for Buccaneers ball a few black patches and pirate hats or scarves around heads and that was it.

The term Ball is a misnormer, it really is just a few dances in one room late at night.

As Lynn has said, don't worry too much about the balls. The balls are events held in the Queen's Room after dinner on several nights of your cruise. Many passengers attend the balls but many passengers choose to spend their evening in other parts of the ship. Standard floor length formal gowns are more the norm than the Cinderella type gowns. Out of the 2000 or so passengers on the ship probably less than 50 actually wear a mask for the masked ball. If you have masks that are easy to pack, put them in your luggage and enjoy wearing them. You will also be given an opportunity to make masks on the ship. The Buccaneer Ball is usually on an elegant casual or casual night. Sometimes it is held outside if the weather is nice. Some passengers will bring pirate attire onboard to wear to the Buccaneer Ball. Again, you will have an opportunity to make a pirate costume on the ship. Some passengers wear a simple scarf and eye patch. Others bring very elaborate costumes. Again, the actual number of passengers wearing pirate attire will be small. There will be contests for the passengers who choose to wear the costumes. You can go to the Queens Room and attend the balls without wearing a costume.

Your 15 day holiday voyage on the QM2 sounds wonderful. Enjoy every minute.

On the June 25th BTB there were about 20 who wore hats for the Ascot night on each leg.

W/bound this included one man (Don't ask). E/bound this included a couple of children. Some of the ladies who had obviously brought hats with them looked very chic but also a bit self conscious as they were parading around. Like any costume event it is all a bit sad unless everyone takes part.

Oh go on... I fell for it. How did they walk? :D

Well spotted! I have beaten my self severely about the head and body with a copy of 'Fowler's'.

Nice to start the day with a smile. icon7.gif Thanks.
