Naples Port-Capri-Sorrento

Hi Everyone,

Hope someone can help me out. I've searched the boards but haven't found much detailed information.

We have a stop in Naples (port) in a couple of weeks and would like to do Capri and Sorrento on our own if possible.

I understand the best route may be Naples to Capri by Hydrofoil, Capri to Sorrento by Hydrofoil and Sorrento to Naples by train.

Here is where I need more details...

Can you walk from the port to catch the Capri hydrofoil or do you need to take a taxi? There seems to be more than one company that offers hyrdofoil services..any one better than the other?

Do we buy our hydrofoil ticket from Capri to Sorrento at the Naples Port or in Capri?

Do we need a taxi from the sorrento train station to the main town or is everything pretty much in walking distance?

How far is the Naples train station from the port? Walk or taxis? are taxis plentiful? What would the average cost be?

Is this too much to do in one day? We are in port from 7-6.

If anyone has done this tour on their own, I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give. Both the private and ship tours are a tad to expensive right now. I speak the language fluently and have travelled in Italy before never in this region independently.

Thanks!

Caroline

you should check out the Italy Ports sub-forum as there is a similar thread regarding this.

basically, you can only purchase Capri hydrofoil tickets to Sorrento once you are already on Capri. when you take the hydrofoil from Naples to Capri and are dropped at Marina Grande, purchase your Capri to Sorrento hydrofoil tickets at that time

to get from the hydrofoil dock to the train station in Sorrento is uphill. you can walk, take a taxi, or bus.

to get from naples back to the port, is approximately a 20-25 minute walk is what i've read. or you can take a taxi or a bus back.

Caroline

The Sorrento train station (where you catch the Circumvesuviana train) is about an eight-minute walk from the central plaza, Piazza Tasso, in Sorrento.

However, the climb from the waterfront (hydrofoil dock) to Sorrento is incredibly steep, so you need to take a bus or taxi.

Sorry I cannot help you out on your other questions; our boat anchored in Sorrento last month, and we spent most of our day in Pompeii, using the Circumvesuviana to and from Sorrento.
