Kathy & George Posted July 23, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 23, 2009 What time do the free shuttles from the ship to the port gates start and end? We will be there two days in Nov. and I am planning a late return the first night and a very early start the next AM. Is it do-able or will the port gates be shut up at night? tom_uk Posted July 23, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 23, 2009 I think this is going to be very hard to find out for certain. The shuttle buses are run by the port authority, not the cruise lines. I've had a look at the english-language version of their website (http://www.port-of-rome.org) and I couldn't see any specific information. Kathy & George Posted July 23, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted July 23, 2009 Thanks Tom, I have emailed the port with my request. I was hoping that someone here had done this and would be able to tell me more info.
eschguy Posted July 23, 2009 #4 Share Posted July 23, 2009 Was just in Civi last week and the first shuttles did not start until 7:30a. It's a healthy 20-25 minute walk from the ship to the gates. Not sure on what time they stop running.
Rare Hlitner Posted July 23, 2009 #5 Share Posted July 23, 2009 Here is my take on the OP questions. We have traveled extensively throughout the world on ships (and on land) and cruised in the Med more than a 20 times. We think that the port of Civitavecchia is one of the best run ports in Europe and would love to personally thank the port managment. The port shuttle service (it is free) used high quality modern buses and is very well organized. They run constantly and we have never waited more than 15 min for a bus. When you are taking a bus from the port entrance, they are all lined-up in a single area and have signs telling you which bus for which ship or ships. There are also staff in the bus-stop area that will point you to the proper bus if you tell them the name of your ship. If you arrive with luggage, they will store your luggage underneath the bus so that you do not have to drag the stuff onto the bus. We have also found the drivers very helpful. Last year we needed to get from our ship to Europcar, which is located about 1/2 mile from the port entrance. We mentioned this to the bus driver and he told us not to get off at the regular bus stop by the port entrance. He than took us (we were the only 2 left on the bus) to a hidden back port gate that was much closer to where we needed to walk to get our rental car. We tried to give that driver a hefty tip (10 Euros) and had to almost force him to take the money. Another nice thing about Civitavecchia is that its only a short 4 block walk on flat sidewalks from port entrance to the train station. The only negative thing about Civitavecchia is that it is difficult to get a rental car on Sundays and there is no cheap easy way for cruise ship passengers to get between the port and airport (it can be done by using trains..but you need to change trains in Rome). dlbutler5 Posted July 23, 2009 #6 Share Posted July 23, 2009 A couple of years ago we left the ship early, 6am, and walked to the train station. It took about 45 minutes but no problems. It was very dark at that time of year though.
Kathy & George Posted July 23, 2009 Author #7 Share Posted July 23, 2009 So it looks like they start at 7:30 and stop at around 6:30pm. Thanks for all who replied. Kathy
