DougYWG Posted July 24, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 24, 2009 We were looking at Singapore to Athens. We both like sea days, but it takes Quest eight days to get from Dubai to Alexandria and that could be a bit much all at once. I would think the ship can do it in half that time. Does anybody know why it takes so long?
Nutrioso Posted July 25, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 25, 2009 Maybe they have to time it with some naval security vessels while going through the Gulf of Aden? Just a guess. ----Penny
capecodder2 Posted July 26, 2009 #3 Share Posted July 26, 2009 Aside from Nutrioso's idea (which is a good one as they should for safety travel in the 500 mile Recommended Transit Corridor patrolled by world-wide Naval vessels in the Gulf of Aden), plus it is a lot of miles from Dubai to Alexandria. Then there is the schedule to travel through the Suez Canal (which can take 15 hours) and get over to Alexandria once they are in the Mediterranean. Better to allow plenty of time than not. I am sure it is not a frivilous choice.
englishlee Posted August 30, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 30, 2009 The distance by sea between Dubai and Alexandria is 3047 nautical miles (via Suez). At 18 knots (as an example) and without allowing any reduction in speed for any reason this journey would take a little over 7 days, so there isn't much leeway. Most people don't realise how far it actually is between these points.
DougYWG Posted August 30, 2009 Author #5 Share Posted August 30, 2009 That's what I love about these boards - hard facts. Thank you for that. It is obviously a much longer trip than I had thought so that explains it.
englishlee Posted August 31, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 31, 2009 You're welcome DougYWG, I'm also looking at doing the Singapore to Athens sector, but in April 2011. Was in Winnipeg a couple of months ago at the jazz festival.
Aussie Gal Posted September 2, 2009 #7 Share Posted September 2, 2009 If you want less sea days and more days in port, why not go on Oceania's Nautica from Hong Kong to Athens. It is a fabulous itinerary which I can highly recommend. We did it last year and it is the best cruise we have ever done. Jennie
