Mount Washington Cog Train or Portland

Hi all

We are coming from the UK to do a New England Cruise with Celebrity on the 16th October and will be visiting Portland.

We can't decide whether to spend our day in Portland or to take the trip to Mount Washington for the cog train and would appreciate your opinions.

Thanks

Steve

The trip - The total distance (oneway) is approx. 100 miles, travel time about 2H 10M. You will be traveling on 2 lane state roads except for when you depart Portland. As part of the trip, you’ll pass through Crawford Notch http://hikethewhites.com/crawford.html

As a visitor to the US, it is an opportunity for you to see some of rural New England and there is a chance to see some of the fall foliage that makes New England a delight to visit during autumn.

If you have never ridden on a cog railway, now is your chance: http://www.thecog.com/index.php

For Mount Washington, it has the worst weather in the US. The average temperature in October is 30°F; the record low is –5°F. FYI, water feezes at 32°F. http://www.mountwashington.org/

This was the best pix I could quckly find of Mt. Washington: http://hikethewhites.com/washington.html

Follow the links provided at that site to other pixs.

IIRC, on your trip to, and just before you reach your destination, you will pass the Mount Washington Hotel http://www.mountwashingtonresort.com/. It was here in 1944 that the historic Bretton Woods Monetary Conference was held.

My suggestion is that you do this excursion.

Enjoy your cruise and visit to the US.

If you get lucky it could be a once in a lifetime experience that time of year; however, I have seen bad weather by then and they might not go to the top. Also it may be in a cloud with zero vis. In anycase it will be an adventure. Bring barf bags. Dress very warm, bring real gloves, something to cover your ears too.
