Oceania excursions in New Zealand and Australia?

We are cruising Oceania Nautica on January 23rd from Auckland to Sydney. Compared to other cruises we have been on (mostly Windstar), their excursions seem to be a bit pricey. Does anyone have any advice as to which excursions are worth the cost? Also any thoughts about which ports can be done without excursions by renting cars and such? Our ports are Tauranga, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney. Thanks for your thoughts.
