Sorrento/Pompei; Amalfi/Positano/Ravello

We went to Pompeii on the train last year on our Azamara cruise...a few added suggestions....

It is a commuter train...we went very early, and it was very hot & crowded. Wait till 9:30...the ticket price goes down, and less people.

Assuming you are coming back to the ship, be sure to get a "return"..in english a 'round-trip'. Cheaper than buying tickets again in Pompeii. "Due (doo-ay) biglietti a Pompeii Scavi, un ritorno per favore" ... Two tickets to Pompeii Scavi, and return please!

Google or Michelin maps online are a great idea for all your stops...but there are signs to the station, and you can just ask. We were shown a shortcut up a flower filled residential alley.

Be sure (as everywhere in Europe) to "validate" (time stamp) your tickets in the appropriate machine before going through the turnstile. We were never asked for our tickets on the train, but needed properly stamped tickets to get back out through the turnstiles when we returned to Sorrento.

There are many good audio walking tours of Pompeii availabe online. We downloaded to our iPods (about $7) and saved. We also stopped to eavesdrop on other live English tourguides ;).

Before the site exit is a nice outdoor cafe, under the trees, where we shared a pitcher of Peroni!! A wonderful day.

Cheers!
