Monarch of the Seas-7/24-7/27 Great Trip Scary Weather

Recommended Posts

Mini review of Monarch of the Seas-Torrential downpours, Water Spout and Coast Guard rescue on CocoCay-7/24-7/27:eek:

My husband and I just returned from a weekend cruise aboard the Monarch of the Seas. We left the kid’s at home against my will and insistence of my wonderful husband. :D Adventure seems to follow us on cruises and this trip was no exception! (If you read my Freedom review-you know what I mean!)

We arrived in Port Canaveral about 2:30pm and had a slight wait through security. Once upstairs to check in we were quickly escorted to the Platinum/Diamond/Priority and were onboard within 10 minutes. There were about 50 people in line on each check in side.

We were pleasantly surprised on how beautiful this ship is! She is fairly easy to navigate and we thoroughly enjoyed the public areas on the Monarch. The center atrium is lovely, Boleros is spacious as well as the Circuit nightclub.

Soon it was Muster (quick and painless) and time for sail away-

We chose My Time Dining for the three days onboard. On the first day it was recommended that we make a reservation for the rest of the weekend. At first we didn't think we would like it but we chose to eat at 7:30pm each evening.

It actually turned out to be a great experience since the My Time Dining was in a separate area than main and second seating guests. It was not like that on Freedom so we were happy!:D

It turns out we really enjoyed the service from the waitstaff team!

The shorter cruises seem to jam pack the highlights of the longer cruises into 3 nights! :p

We particularly enjoyed the rock and roll band in Boleros all weekend! We danced until my feet could take no more;)!

It reminded us of our first cruise on Nordic Empress-quaint!!

We arrived around noon in Nassau and waited about 20 minutes in line to get off the ship. They only had one gangway available for passengers to get off the ship. It may not seem like a long wait but the lines wrapped up a few floors!

We caught a bus downtown and went over to Wyndam Beach Resort on Cable Beach. The bus was $1.25 per person. (Exact change!) After about 30 minutes we arrived and went to the check-in desk and received our day passes. The passes are until 6pm and includes a buffet lunch, use of the beach and heated pools at both Wyndam Resort and Sheraton. We only got to enjoy about an hour at the pool when the torrential downpours began!

Here are some photos of the pool area:

The beach was absolutely beautiful and I was not brave enough to dodge lighting to take a picture of it !

Since the rain was showing no signs of letting up we ate at the buffet that was included in the price of our day passes. The food was pretty good. After lunch we gambled for a while in the casino.

We decided the rain was showing no signs of letting up so we elected to take a taxi back to port. The downtown streets were pretty flooded. :(

Once back on board there were not many venues for a rainy day so we booked a couples massage. It was fantastic and completely relaxing. Yes, they tried to sell us products but we politely declined. The massage and service in the spa was excellent and we were stress free!!:D

That evening there was a comedian/juggler that was outstanding-Mike Price! He was the best juggler I have ever seen. He used lasers in his juggling act and he actually received a standing ovation from the audience. Those who cruise frequently know how special a standing ovation is on a cruise ship!;)

The poolside buffet was wonderful and it really helped that the rain cleared out of there. The food was outstanding and there were plenty of people to eat the food! (No wasting here!) Everyone seemed to really enjoy dancing under the stars and we liked it too!

On the 3rd day we visited Coco Cay and unfortunately right when we went to step on the tender, a waterspout was over Coco Cay-so we elected to stay onboard.

Later in the afternoon we saw the US Coast Guard landing a helicopter on the island. I’m not sure what happened, however, the captain did announce two people were injured and were being transported back to the US for treatment of their injuries. We just hope that they are okay.

This review went pretty quick and so did our weekend!:)

The last evening was Italian night (my favorite) and did not disappoint! We missed Quest because I fell asleep:p

In closing, you can't control the weather! It is amazing that you can do so many other things on the ship.

Also, don't be afraid to try the smaller ships! There are some things we preferred over the larger ships! For example, the public areas seem to be laid out much better!

For a short weekend getaway we will be looking to Monarch again! Maybe we'll take the kids next time! (Maybe;))

I really enjoyed your review. Posting pictures really added to it! Sounds like you had a very nice getaway even if you didn't have nice weather. Too bad you didn't get a picture of the water spout. I'm surprised that they were tendering people over to the island.

Thank you. It was a great getaway despite the weather.

Typically we always take the camera with us, but after Saturday, we decided to leave it on the ship. We met a couple at dinner that had a great picture of it!

NCL was anchored nearby at Great Stirrup Cay so maybe a picture will surface.

Thank you for the review. I am trying to talk Sweetums into taking this cruise in January, when I usually have my winter melt down.(Atlanta is winter, gray, gray, gray) Money will be tight, but I see that there are some great bargains to be had, and your pictures of the ocean view rooms are much better than RCL's website. Think I'll call them now!
