MRS TIGGYWINKLE Posted August 1, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 1, 2009 Wondered if anyone had any helpful hints about what we could do in or around Bari on our own without doing a ships excursion. We are there in October on our first Costa cruise and advice sure would be appreciated. Many thanks:)
ab0si Posted August 2, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 2, 2009 Bari is a rather ugly city with not a lot to see. there are a few somewhat interesting medievel buildings. I would suggest heading to Alberobello to see the trulli. A private rail company runs hourly service to her from Bari (no service on Sundays) and there are buses. The same train line also stops at Grotte di Castellana (caves). I have not visited these.
euro cruiser Posted August 2, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 2, 2009 I respectfully disagree with the previous poster, there are lovely areas of Bari, especially in the historic district. Beyond Bari, I would agree with the previous poster and suggest Alberobello (about an hour from Bari). Another option is Matera, a fascinating place, to see the sassi (cave dwellings). Matera is a bit farther out, perhaps an hour and a half. The best way to see this part of Italy is in a car, either drive yourself or hire a car and driver for the day. Driving yourself is easy. Bari is a city, but it's nothing like Rome, Naples, Milan, etc. in terms of traffic and is quite easy to drive in.
