Bari - any suggestions???

Bari is a rather ugly city with not a lot to see. there are a few somewhat interesting medievel buildings.

I would suggest heading to Alberobello to see the trulli.

A private rail company runs hourly service to her from Bari (no service on Sundays) and there are buses.

The same train line also stops at Grotte di Castellana (caves). I have not visited these.

I respectfully disagree with the previous poster, there are lovely areas of Bari, especially in the historic district.

Beyond Bari, I would agree with the previous poster and suggest Alberobello (about an hour from Bari).

Another option is Matera, a fascinating place, to see the sassi (cave dwellings). Matera is a bit farther out, perhaps an hour and a half.

The best way to see this part of Italy is in a car, either drive yourself or hire a car and driver for the day. Driving yourself is easy. Bari is a city, but it's nothing like Rome, Naples, Milan, etc. in terms of traffic and is quite easy to drive in.
