Another Bad Accident on Seward Highway

For anyone renting a car up here, please be careful and pay attention to those around you.

Some of our local drivers, like other areas, are neither the most courteous or thoughtful when it comes to those around them. The major highways have more than their share who do not observe speed limits or exercise caution when changing lanes or passing so be alert. What makes these string of accidents so sad is that they easily could have been avoided.

The last 3 accidents have shut the highway down for 4 hours, 6 hours, and 5 hours. It's one reason why we constantly tell people on this board to not plan tight schedules.

Yes, I've heard that, and think that is great advice. We have allowed basically 12 hours to get from Kasilof to Anchorage, but planned many stops along the way; Girdwood, Portage Glacier, Wildlife center, Beluga point etc. Hopefully, for more reasons that one, there will be no delays.

If there is a delay on the Seward Highway, there is no Plan B. No other way to get to your ship, your plane or your hot date.

None!

The highway department turns people back at a safe point to turn around, often miles from the cruise site. There is no appeal if the road is closed.
