Crusin from Barcelona to Galveston

Recommended Posts

Booked the RCCL transatlantic in November/09

We are flying out of Houston International to Barcelona.

Cruise comes back to Galveston....

so

do we leave our car at the Houston airport and find a way from Galveston back to the airport after the cruise - for a good price or do we do the reverse? Leave the car in Galveston and shuttle (or something) to Houston International... that way the car is right in Galveston right after the cruise.

Looking for the best and least expensive way of doing this.

Thanks for your assistance in advance.

Im not aware of a shuttle service from Galveston to the airport, but that's not to say that there is not one. Does RCCL offer a transfer from pier to airport? If they do that is probably going to be your best bet as they have a lot called Parking Cents(@IAH) that is only about $7 day. Last time we, cruised from Galveston the cruise lots were closer to $15 a day.

Parking lots at Intercontinental start at $4.36/day and lots in Galveston at $7/day. I suggest you call the lots and ask for pricing on long term parking. Look up parking on the internet at the airport and galveston.com for the port.

We parked at IAH last year for one month at $3/day.

Parking Cents is the remote lot owned by the airport. They are $6/day - but no long term discount - I parked there for 15 days in February and it was $90. Was there earlier this month - 8 days - $54. The privately owned lots will quote a price that seems cheaper, but does not include the sales tax. Also, you will need coupons for the cheapest rates at the private lots. Some of the lots that are nationwide - can't remember the names - have the coupons on their websites. IAH to Galveston has to be at least 60 miles, so no transfer between the two places will be really cheap.

So, you are driving from BC to Texas? If so, here's an idea.

We live in Texas, and did the exact same cruise last fall, flying from Houston (IAH) to Barcelona and, after arriving in Galveston, driving back home (a few hours away).

So, here's what we did. On the way to Galveston, we drove by IAH the day before our flight and picked up a cheap one-day rental car. Drove that, plus our own car, to Galveston where we stayed at a hotel that offers free parking during a cruise. (We like the Hilton, but there are quite a few that offer this; see galveston.com for more info.)

Stayed overnight there. Left our car at the hotel and drove the rental the next morning to IAH, turned it in, took rental car shuttle to airport and flew to BCN.

Upon return, the hotel where we had parked also offered a free shuttle from the pier back to the hotel, where we picked up our car and drove home.

The rental car was cheaper than two shuttle/bus fares.

The hotel bill was cheaper than 14 days parking fees, plus we enjoyed an evening in Galveston.

And, when we docked in Galveston, we were minutes away from our car and on our way home way before noon.

It worked out very well for us, and we would do the same again.

HTH,

Jan
