We were in Rome in May 08. We did not use a tour guide for the Rome ghetto. We walked around ourselves. We had a delicious lunch at the Taverna del Ghetto. They served fried artichokes, zucchini and fish that was so good. Also ordered a dish that was similar to brisket but served on pasta.

The food was terrific.

We went to the Synagogue and took their tour. The entrance fee was 7.5 Euros for adults and 4 Euros for students. The Synagogue has excellent security. The tour guide was wonderful. The Great Synagogue of Rome was one of the most beautiful my DH and I have ever visited. If you do a bit of research with a travel book (we used Rick Steve's Rome, which has an excellent section called Jewish Ghetto Walk) you can easily visit Trestevere, the Rome Ghetto and Synagogue on your own. The website for the Museo Ebraico di Roma is http://www.museoebraico.roma.it/ The museum tour includes the Great Synagogue and the smaller Spanish (Sephardic) Synagogue. The area is very interesting and has one of the oldest Jewish communities outside of Israel as many there can trace their roots back to Roman times. The Synagogue website also states that walking tours are offered, but we walked around on our own.

We also took the guided tour offered at the Jewish museum (in June) of some of the museum exhibits, the smaller synagogue and the large synagogue itself, and also agree that it was excellent.

We were interested in the tour of the entire Ghetto area they offer once or twice a day, but with only the two of wanting the area walking tour, instead of the four minimum, we decided not to pay double (they offered us this option) but just use our Rick Steves' Rome guidebook for the area.
