What should we do in Anchorage?

A visit to the Native Heritage Center and to Earthquake Park would be on my list of things to see or do. You might also consider a one day car rental to drive down to Portage Glacier. The Visitors Center is very interesting. If you have time to drive to Girdwood, you could take the gondola up to the top of Mt. Alyeska or ask a local to explain the term "Spenard Divorce";)

In Anchorage--Native American Heritage Center would be on top of my list. If you like pizza, the Moose's Tooth Pub off Seward Hwy. and 33rd is very good. Area around the Earthquake Park would give you a beautiful view of the Inlet and downtown Anchorage. Your other option would be to rent a car and you probably could do the 1 hr. Portage Glacier Cruise, Mt. Alyeska Tram, and Wildlife Conservation Center(all between Anchorage and Whittier) and not be terribly rushed.

We recently enjoyed renting a bike (easy-to-find bike shop on the main street, few blocks away from Hilton) and riding the length of Tony Knowles trail. Bike rental not expensive and bikes in good shape and comfortable. Trail flat and easy. Scenery interesting, though not anywhere near as lovely as many other bike trails we've been on (we only do essentially flat trails). An altogether pleasant couple of hours.

Walked around town a bit in the afternoon, had lunch at Glacier Brewhouse. Nice hanging baskets along streets and some pretty small gardens in front of buildings. Nothing especially memorable, but a pleasant pre-cruise day.
