Stockholm archipelago

When arriving and departing, will the ship go through the archipelago? We will be on Celebrity Eclipse next summer. If not, we may take a 2.5 hour boat tour of it. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Marlyne

To reach the port of Stockholm, the ship HAS to go through the archipelago, so yes, you will. Be sure to be outside on the upper deck, forward, it's amazingly beautiful.

Or get up early, sit on your balcony, eat breakfast and watch it go by..... Ships always sail in after sunrise and out before sunset, so enjoy the view.

I am really excited about this. Thanks. Marlyne

Don't miss Old Town (Gamla Stan) and the Vasa museum. Stockholm is very easy to see on-your-own. Just use one of the sightseeing boats that loop around the various islands.

We have been to Stockholm 4 times, so we know how wonderful the old town is. The last time it was pouring rain, so we didn't get to sit in the square drinking coffee. We love having lunch there. We plan to spend time in old town maybe watch the changing of the guard. When we have cruised before once it was fogged in so we couldn't see the archipelago and for the other cruise on Princess we docked an hour away by train and the ship did not go through the archepelago. We saw the Helsinki archipelago and did a Norwegian Coastal voyage, so we have seen some similar sights, but we want to see Stockholm's. Thanks. Marlyne

last June on the Century we had the chance to sail right behind the yachts of the Volvo Race, who had a stopover in Stockholm. They were escorted by hundreds of other boats, ships, yachts.... The forward part of the Century was opened and the sight was impressive !

On our Baltic cruise, the Captain opened the helicopter pad for Captain's Club Elite, and invited quite a few to the bridge for the sail-a-way from Stockholm. It was fantastic.

Absolutely go on deck or your balcony sailing in to Stockholm - it is truly picturesque. We also had a seagull encounter during sailing in so have fun! I have posted our Stockholm pics from our Century cruise - and the other Baltic ports if interested - just click on the port link when you get there.

Just back from the Baltic on Constellation. I was up at 4am watching the archipelago from our balcony - it was well worth getting up so early. As we were on main sitting we were having dinner as we sailed out so missed most of it.

This was my favorite part of my Baltic cruise....I (to my own disbelief) woke up a around 4 a.m and took some lovely pictures of the archipelago in this amazing dusky blue light.

Then , after a perfect day in Stockholm, we ordered dinner from the MDR and sat on our balcony for hours as we went through the archipelago (we had beautiful weather). The gorgeous island houses have now made me want to move to Stockholm.

If I could figure it out , I´d put some pictures here , but I am computer challenged.

Have fun!

also be on deck when they sail under the bridge that connects Sweden and Denmark - amazing!

The bridge you go under connects two islands of Denmark. This is the Storebalt (Great Belt) bridge and connects the Danish islands of Sjalland and Fyn. None of the Celebrity ships fit under the bridge between Sweden and Denmark - they all have to go back arround Sjalland.

Either way its a wonderful sight.

That is so great!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can hardly stand to wait. Did the ship have a shuttle or did you take a bus or taxi to old town? I don't know if you had the itinery of going into Bruges. If so, was there a shuttle from the dock to Bruges? Thanks. We will definitely enjoy our balcony and deck for the views at Stockholm. Marlyne

Since everyone is discussing it - photos don't do it justice.

When we sailed on the Constellation 05 it was one of the trips highlights. If I remember correctly we entered at around 6am. We were fortunate to have an Aft Corner, Large balcony room. Every aft cabin was filled with people drinking coffee and taking in the beauty.

Never did this on a cruise ship but the archipelego is beautiful. My experience was sailing out to Sandhamn before returning to Gamla Stan. 4 days on a 42 foot Swan Yacht. I ended up steering and would recommend leaving the driving to the ship's captain and/or pilot. Those big ferry's came up on us like we were toys in a bathtub :D.

It was a great experience. Fortunately the company I worked at had an office and apartment on Skeppsbrun where we docked. Had time to shower and made it to the airport 20 minutes before takeoff . I guess I've dated this since there is no way you could do this in the post 9/11 world.

Enjoy folks, especially those going in June. Happy midsummer.

I was on the maiden voyage of the Millie back in 2000 and there was a problem with one of the propulsion pods. We limped into port for repairs the rest of the trip was adjusted to fit in all ports. We actually came back to Stockholm between Helsinki and St Petersburg which shortened the time we had in port. That ended up being fortuitous because we could really enjoy the archipeligo. The pilot came aboard about 8am and pretty soon we started seeing the first islands. We did not dock until noon. It was an amazing and (for me at least) an unexpected experience. It made the Inside Passage seem just "OK." If I ever go back I will know to set my alarm.

The sail through the Stockholm archipelago is just stunning, so peaceful. All the little islands with the wooden houses and boats are picture postcard perfect. We were lucky enough to have a corner aft on the Vision of the seas last month to enjoy this wonderful scenery both in the evening for the sail out and early morning for the return. I woke up at 5am and opened the curtains and just laid in bed and watched the sun rise as we glided through all the little islands. It was magical!

Here are a couple of pics of the evening sailaway:
