Cash advance at the casino?

Recommended Posts

Question for all you RCI veterans.... Does RCI let you take cash out on your S/S card? The reason I ask is because I have found it's a great way not to have to travel with a lot of cash. When we have sailed Carnival, they put a hold of funds on our credit card of $300pp for a 7-day sailing. That's $600 and we never spend that much on our sail and sign card. Rather than take an expense cash advance at double digit interest, we have gone to the casino, gotten a $100 worth of quarters against our s/s card and paid only a $3 fee. That's like using an ATM and I can leave my cash at home. Just wondering I can take cash out at the RCI casino and if so, what is the fee?

Yes, you can get cash with your SeaPass card, and it goes against your room charges. Whatever credit card you've used to secure your account is then charged with this amount.

There's no fee, unless they've changed the policy since last November. This is not a cash advance against your credit card; it's treated like any other shipboard charge.

I remember reading before that you can get up to $2,000 a day from the casino, assuming your credit card limit allows it.

Nope, there's still no charge to get cash out of the casino window... in fact, they're more than happy to do it! The limit is still $2000 a day.

Instead of getting cash from the casino, why not call RCCL and ask about a shipboard credit?

I always put money on my cabin and don't have to worry about carrying lots of cash and also don't have to worry about going to the casino for an advance.

For a shipboard credit, you go to the Customer Relations Desk and explain you have a credit and you would like to withdraw some of it. Worked great for us on the last cruise, and already putting money on our cabin for the next cruise.

Hope this helps and RCCL can answer all your questions on this.

Cool! That's just the answer I wanted. Then I can leave my cash at home in the bank (accessible throug the ATM in emergencies) and I can get more points on my credit card! Thank you... and I'll try and remember.. seapass on RCI.. not sail and sign! icon_smile.gif

Okay but here's part #2 of the question. On Carnival, they wouldn't give me bills, even though I told them I wanted it in $5's to put into the bill feeders of the machines. I had to get coin, open all the rolls and cash them in as if I had won then. Can I just get cash on RCI?

I'm glad you brought that up, I have been buying shipboard credit through the gifts department. I've been buying $30 each paycheck and we get 5 checks a month so I should have about $600 in shipboard credit by cruise time. I most likely will not even have to use a credit card for my seapass (see, i'm learning) account. And since it's shipcredit, you're saying I can just withdrawl that from the customer relations desk?? That's even better! I'm planning on having all the money I need for shore excursions and my sea pass charges waitin for me on the ship. It will feel like a free cruise if I don't have to bring any money!

And just think... if you pay off your seapass account with the RCI visa card, you could take that $5000 home, use it to pay off part of the bill, and get 10,000 points for free!!!

Well I guess that settles it then. I will just keep buying my shipboard credit prior to sailing and withdraw it as needed onboard. Thanks for all your help guys!

Yes, you can get whatever donominations you want through the casino. We got over 600.00 out on one day and they broke it down the way we wanted.

Are we the only ones who have been chastised by the casino cashier while asking for cash? After reading about getting cash from the casino on these boards, I told my DH this would be a better choice than traveling with a lot of cash since we were doing a couple of excursions (not ship sponsored) that required cash. Mid week, we went to the casino and asked for $400. The cashier asked if we were playing the slots or the tables. We replied with the truth, we just wanted cash. The cashier told us that was not allowed. I said I'd read where this could be done. She said they'd do it this one time only in a scolding tone. Sounds like purchasing shipboard credits ahead of time might be a better solution over the casino. If it matters, this happened on the Radiance in March.

If they ask you this, all you have to say is that you want to play the tables. The cashiers window on RCI ships isn't allowed to sell you chips, just cash. They can buy chips, just not sell them.

Kathy, we received the same "Frowns" the first time we tried to do it on Carnival. That's why we just asked for dollar tokens then, opened them up and then cashed them in as if we'd won. A little more hassle but worth it not to have to carry cash.

Let's see here. You want to withdraw cash that will go to your Seapass account and help pad the RCI bankroll. And they question your usage?

That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. My response would've been:

"I'm withdrawing cash to SPEND it aboard your cruise ship Bozo the Clown!"

Where and what you do with it shouldn't be any of their &^%$ business. icon_mad.gif

PAMMY: One thing to avoid is the ATM. The fee was $5.75 on my last cruise. About as bad as the price of gas lately...

Avoid alot of hassles and put the money on your cabin and you will not have to worry about people frowning on you in the casino.

I always have a shipboard credit and not once have I had anybody tell me that I can't withdraw money. Again, the main thing when at the PR desk, is to explain from the beginning, that you have a shipboard credit.. No problem just tell them how much you want to withdraw.

My thinking is, if you know you are going to spend (approximately) so much money on board, why not pay for it in advance and it is one less thing to worry about. Actually, another good point of doing this is not having to carry around that much cash.. Makes perfect sense to me.

Unfortunatly, we can't get the visa points for money that we pay in advance. And honestly, I'm one of those people that don't care if they frown on my practices, I usually lose enough in the casino that they don't mind the extra takeouts, and I know that that was the case for a number of my fellow gamblers. We actually discussed it at the poker table, and the dealer told us that it was not an uncommon occurrance for people to do this.

As soon as it came out of our mouthes, I knew we'd made a Rookie mistake by asking for cash for personal use, not for use in the Casino. Everybody here made it seem like it was an everyday occurence just to ask for cash so, we didn't think anything about it. Next trip, we'll be playing the tables. icon_biggrin.gif

TBRay.. good answer! I'll tell Bozo what you said should he/she give me any problems!

Carnival charges 3% to get casino cash which is still better than the ATM onboard and far more reliable as I've heard the ATM's frequently run out of cashola.

I've never had a problem getting cash on my sea pass, which is charged as a regular charge against my Amex card. I've often asked for more than one 'withdrawal' in a day, and usually several of the weekend. Never had a problem or got an attitude. Yes, they do ask if I'm playing the slots or the tables - I think if you're playing the tables, they tend to give you a higher denomination ($100s). Hubby and I both like to gamble (got it from my Dad who was a 4th ranked national craps champion)and don't like carrying around a lot of cash. Always got it from the casino - no problem.

Right at the window. It helps that I played the casino almost every night (Caribbean Stud Poker rules!!!) so the pit bosses knew me by name, and the tellers never hesitated giving me the cash. I actually won really big one night, so I came out of the casino even.

Anyway, me almost maxed out our credit card limit getting cash at the casino, and then just split it up among the five of us and took it back with us, deposited it, and used it to pay off the credit card bill. We netted about 60,000 RCI Visa points on our last cruise, after this little trick and everything else was paid for (cruise fare, airfare, hotel pre and post, food pre and post, etc.) Allegedly the accountant has a plan for avioding the taxes as well (that was the only problem we found with our little plan, and he says he knows a way around it).

Duhhh! now I'm confused. Is it better to get a RCI card for points [have no idea how that works] or just use our Discover for their rebate? Seems obvious we should take draws on our RCI sail card for points or money from one or the other and not carry cash. [My husband will freak over this. Will assume & prob. correctly, that we'll spend more that way!] TIA
