robdyn Posted August 25, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 25, 2009 We will arrive around 1 pm on New Years Day for our cruise on Freedom on Jan. 2, 2010 and wondered if anything would be open. I'm sure restaurants will be but what about other things. We thought we would maybe try to buy some liquor to take on board and rather than packing it in our luggage would there be somewhere we could pick up something there. Also I'm sure 7-eleven etc. for soda, but what about liquor.:confused: Thanks for any suggestions anyone may have.

Lauderdale on 1/2/10 there will be liquor stores open on New Year's Day as well as on your departure day. I don't know where you will be staying, but there is a liquor store called "Big Daddy's" (yes, that's the name, and it's a nice place with friendly, customer-service minded staff) on the same street as the port. Big Daddy's liquors is on State Rd. 84 (also known as 24th street) in the Winn-Dixie Supermarket plaza about 1 to 1 1/2 miles from the port. There is also a store called 'Crown Liquors' on Cordova Rd. also about a mile or so from the port. If you are staying in a hotel on 17th St., then this would be the most convenient place to go; however, I do not know if they will be open on New Year's Day. Big Daddy's is open everyday; even Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, everyday. Big Daddy's would have the better prices of the two.

I forgot to mention that even though Big Daddy's is open everyday, on holidays they do close early (like at 5 or 6PM). But, if you're flying into Ft. Lauderdale/hollywood airport, the airport is closer to Big Daddy's than the cruiseship port is: I'd tell the cab driver to take me to Big Daddy's first, before they take me to the hotel. If you want to make sure you get your booze, that's what I'd do. Crown Liquors is probably open on New Years Day, but, again, I'm not sure about them. BlueJacketsFan1 Posted August 25, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 25, 2009 What is open where you live on New Years Day. I always thought most things were closed. You will have the hotels and the 7 Elevens, but I would be planning on a whole lot being open.

Having travelled to Florida a # of times, I know that the only day that you can't find anything (just the odd restaurant) is Thanksgiving, so I wasn't quite sure about NY day. We will be staying at LaQuinta with shuttlel from airport to hotel and again shuttle to port. I'm not quite sure where it is from where the previous post said, but I guess we'll find something. Thanks for your suggestions.:)

robdyn Posted August 27, 2009 Author #9 Share Posted August 27, 2009 Is the LaQuinta in Ft. Lauderdale or is the address located in a neighboring suburb? The address of the LaQuinta we booked is 2620 North 26th Ave, Hollywood. Apparently pretty close to both airport and ship.

I'm familliar with the area where that hotel is. Very close to your hotel there is a BJ's wholesale club that has a liquor store. It is in a shopping plaza called 'Oakwood Plaza'. You do not need a BJ's membership card to patronize the liquor store. The store does not sell small bottles of liquor; it sells 750ml bottles or larger at very good prices. Oakwood Plaza is a nice shopping center. There is also a Kmart, TGI Friday's, Dave and Buster's, Home Depot, Old Navy, Barnes and Noble, and a movie theatre there. I hope this has been helpful. I just moved to FLL in July and I actually live in the suburb Plantation. I do not think you will have any problem finding things open on New Year's Day. I would think most of the liquor stores and the malls will be open. You mentioned staying in Hollywood and the Hard Rock Casino will surely be open for business. Also, there is a nice board walk and beach in Hollywood. John & Shari
robdyn Posted August 28, 2009 Author #12 Share Posted August 28, 2009 Thanks to you all for the info. I'm sure we will find what we need which will save us packing liquids carefully for our flight from Toronto.
