Locals view of island...

I really really hate to be a negative person but I hated Cozumel and felt really pestered there :')

It made it onto my worst cruise ports list :p http://cruisingisntjustforoldpeople.co.uk/2016/11/02/worst-cruise-ports-5-ports-which-i-would-not-return-to/

There was a large shopping centre there which felt very made for the tourists. The people in the shops wouldn't take no for an answer... I'm really not sure what else is around.

I'm sure it totally is possible to explore the island like a local but don't do what I did and get off and expect to just go for a wander... make sure you plan something and I'm sure you'll have a better experience than me :)

We went there a few years ago. I ordered a map online. All of the tourist places were near the pier and south. We went north to Playa Azul. It was not such a tourist place. Great beach.

A few blocks in from the pier it seemed pretty gritty and I'm not sure it would be a great place to go.

Forget the negative comments on this thread....Book a driver for the day via Tours Plaza and take a tour of the entire island, not just the tourist-oriented shopping plaza. Drivers are locals, they all speak English.

See the blowholes and rugged coast on the East side, have lunch at a great place there, climb the lighthouse, stop at the ruins, stop at the Tequila Factory, stop at Kaokao Chocolate Factory, have the driver show you the streets and shops locals use not the tourist ones. Have a great day!
