What to do in Tortola with baby?

Hi! We will be in Tortola in December for a short day, from 7am to 3pm. We will have our 14 months old baby with us as well as my parents and in-laws.

What would you recommend as far as excursions and activities?

Tortola is a beautiful island to tour and also has gorgeous beaches. For your shorter day in port you could take an island tour from one of the drivers at the dock, The safari taxi group tours are quite inexpensive at ~$25pp for 3 - 4 hrs. If you want a van or something safer for the 14 month old, the gals at the visitor center can help you with that. You can also include a beach stop for lunch and to relax for an hour or so.

For a nice beach day you can just taxi to Cane Garden Bay which is home to several beach bars/restaurants and most of your fellow cruisers will go there. Or Brewers Bay which has one beach bar and more rustic restrooms. Group taxi fare to either beach is $8pp each way, the child is free.

However, another option which is a nice way to get away from the crowds and enjoy a nice little island is to taxi to Trellis Bay, There is a very nice pottery shop in Trellis Bay (Aragorn's), and you can take the short, free ferry to Marina Cay. The ferry runs hourly from 8:30AM - 11:30PM. You can have a lunch at Pusser's Pub there and explore the island. Very nice spot and unique - nice day that!

We will also be there with our 14 month old in December. So far from what I have researched the best beach location with kids would be Brewers Beach. Not too crowded and shallow water. The only concern my wife has is the taxi ride over to the beach.

Yes Brewers or CGB would be good choices depending on the vibe you want.

Marina Cay is a different option and something I would consider if the short ferry ride isn't a concern. It's a much flatter drive than to Brewers or CGB, and it's a very nice spot - a bit more "Caribbeany" experience than the more popular beaches, although Brewers is beautiful...:)

"A bit interesting" is a perfect description! No real seatbelt or safety seat options on the safari taxis, but you're right in that they don;t go that fast and you don't feel in danger.

Glad you enjoyed your day at CGB, that is a great choice with kids of all ages as there are more facilities there. We've seen the water rough when staying at Myett's, but the water is generally quite calm and it's a nice, deep beach.

I just made reservations for chairs at Myett's for a group in February. Chair rental is $5/person. Taxi ride is $8 from port and that's set by the government. Kimmy at Myett's was great to deal with, and if you are worried about chair availability I'd suggest emailing them and making arrangements ahead of your visit.

It is the busiest beach for day visitors, but also offers the best food and drink options, as well as a nice little shop at Myett's, and of course the Callwood rum distillery over by Quito's place.

If you do choose Sapphire on St Thomas just grab a nice, shady spot under the seagrape and palm trees along the water to the right as you walk toward the water. Paradise! Secret Harbor is also nice, just doesn't have the same "character" that Sapphire offers IMHO.
