Bali: Boston Globe Profile, Details!!

From the Boston Globe travel section this weekend, they have this headline: "Escape to Bali’s otherworldly beaches and unforgettable sunrises" with this one highlight: "Batur is one of Bali’s most sacred mountains, believed by Balinese Hindus to be home to Dewi Danu, the water goddess and keeper of Lake Batur, the crater lake at the mountain’s base responsible for supplying water and irrigation to much of the island. Although the rest of Indonesia is nearly 95 percent Muslim, Bali, one of the largest of the country’s 6,000 inhabited islands, is predominantly Hindu. Religion and ritual play a significant role in daily life, from canang sari — the coconut-leaf packets of incense, rice, sweets, and found objects that appear in doorways and on street corners every morning as offerings to supreme Hindu god Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa — to ceremonies marking nearly every life event."

This is a long and detailed profile with many interesting background items from their magazine. Australia and New Zealand are the closest we have gotten to Bali, but it is on our future "to-do" priority list. Reactions on this story from others who traveled to Bali?

Hi there, having been to Bali many times, the article is accurate but I think Batur is a less interesting destination if you had one day. Probably I would suggest Ubud and the locations around about or Tanah Lot. Both are heavily touristed but for good reason.

BTW Bali isn't a Pacific Island, it is a part of Indonesia and therefore part of Asia. ;)

Appreciate this great and interesting question/comment. Indonesia and Bali are clearly islands and not directly connected to Asia as is a location such as Singapore. But, islands are islands, right? Maybe? Or, not? Your raising of this smart question did force me to go to the maps, dig deeper, etc. Bali is closer to the Indian Ocean than the Pacific, but, but and BUT??!!

THANKS for making me research more! Always fun to be learning and knowing a little more. Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
